High Uintas in April
#1
I tired of playing tug of war with big cutts in the Upper Provo along Mirror Lake highway. The tugging was actually fine just the big ones are just barely starting to show up and were still very few and far between. So I took a little drive up to the high country to take a look. Here's a few pics of what I found. The border collie is 14 and blew out both ACL's over the past 2 summers so the walk wasn't too far. Temperature at 10,000 ft was 48 degrees at 2 pm.

Lucy ( dog) is on the mend. She managed about 3 miles checking out lakes in the snow after maybe a mile on the river below before that. I think 10 mile trips are over but hopefully she'll do fine on shorter ones. The road was semi snow free (drivable) until about a mile below Trial Lake turn off. Driving down about 5 miles from where I parked,a snow plow was heading up so wouldn't be surprised if it's open to above Trial Lake now. The edge of that lake was just floating slush. Had to clear away some of it to get a line in the water.
Wolf Creek Pass (Highway 35) is open.

Not sure where you're heading but Mill Hollow road was still snowed in. Mill Hollow reservoir was still solid 3 weeks ago.
I saw 3 open water spots on the lake pictured ( isn't any of the ones listed on that sign) The largest spot was 6-8 ft wide and ran at least a 100 ft along the shore. If there's soft water at 10,000 I'm betting Mill Hollow has some being below 9000 ft.

Not really going, but more a gauge. I went that way to the lodge when I worked there and it seemed to take forever to be opened. Got snowed on bad over Memorial weekend a few years back. Great trip though. My favorite was the hill side loaded with sheep and in the clearing, a Sheep Dog sitting there watching. Did not seem real. Or the Moose in the next turn, and lotsa Deer. Beautiful ride.
