Warm River fly rod test
#1
We were in Ashton for a family thing yesterday evening so I threw my son's new 2/3 wt fly rod he got for his birthday in just in case. We ended up at warm river campground around 7 pm and started just above the bridge in the campground. We got a few half hearted rises just off the banks and in the riffles, but couldn't get them to connect well. My son then decided he was bored and went looking for bugs on the shoreline. I worked my way down past the bridge and finally landed a small rainbow. Maybe 6 inches. We let him go and them moved to the lower area of the campground. My son worked on casting again along the far shore line and did manage to finally hook and land his own fish on a fly! He was even mending the line! We went back to the shore and were just practicing from the bank when we notice a flurry of rises on the far side and just down from us. I quickly put him on my shoulders and stripped enough line for him to roll cast easily while we wade across (he was pretty cold by now, but didn't want to quit yet). After we got in the area he quickly hooks up on a nicer fish that was able to take some line from the reel. Unfortunately it threw the hook after a little bit. He quickly casts into the same area and gets another aggressive strike! Unfortunately in his enthusiasm he set the hook like he was bass fishing and it was too much for the 4# leader. We lost the fly and the fish. But he was ecstatic and agreed it was a good time to go, as long as I agreed to take him back again for more fishing.

Sounds like a great time. I think that is a great place to train kids fly fishing.
