Had a failure last night so I need a down rigger release replacement. So thought I'd ask what is your favorite DR release? I'd like to get a good one. Thanks J

I have used Blacks releases for many years with good success. I like them because they are adjustable, so you can adjust for heaver lures or flashers.

My Internet search showed a lot of good reviews of the Blacks release so it's good to hear a local likes them as well. I'm sort of leaning to try one. I'm not real happy with the clothes pin type. That's what I have had and I'm not getting good releases or else I'm getting pre releases depending on how I've set it up. Thanks for the tip. J

Black's is the only way to go !!! You can also stack em !! Another little trick is to cut the left side of one arm, then the right side of the other and you can slide it on and off the cable of your rigger. They are the most adjustable release out there, you can run 4lb line on your rod and still get the release to trigger !! Go Black's

Thanks that sounds great. I have had others suggest Chamberlain releases. Anyone have good or bad to say about them? I'm really leaning to Black are they had to learn to use? Reason for asking is I may not get them till the morning of DAV. Don't want to ruin a vets trip because I don't know my equipment yet. Later J

Skunked, I will be at that event also. I can bring a couple of extra releases for you to try if you want , and yes they are easy to use.

I'll vote for the Black's too. I've used the rubber pinch styles a lot, but they're always inconsistent IMO. With the Black's, once you have them adjusted, they'll stay the same until you adjust them again, and you can preload the rod more without popping the line out. I also like the ones with about 2 feet of cable between the weight and the release, so the weight stays in the water all the time instead of banging against the side of the boat. It's a good way to go.

Do they still release with small fish if you set them with a heavy rod preload? I guess I got a set ordered but Cabelas is slow delivering compared to Amazon so I won't get them by the weekend. Thanks everyone for the info. J

We used to use 4 & 6lb line for real finicky fish, but with flurocarbon line/leaders, you can go back to 10-12, set the release as light as you want and still get the load on the rod. If you are fishing kokanee, I would not load the rod to much as you will pull it out of their mouth. Loved em for fishing f7 flatfish at the berry on 6lb line . Had two small Walker riggers on a board that went across the front deck of my old Glastron Bass Boat. They used 4lb weights and were good down to about 75ft. The clips would trip on small Kokes or Rainbows. Used standard 7ft med action spinning rods. NOT a big trout fisherman, but it was fun to go up for 3-4 hours once a week to get a feel for what was happening.

I'm finding myself doing the same thing with line weights. I'm starting to use mostly 10 or 12 lb test to my expensive lure then 6 lb to my hooks. I got tired of losing tackle and the fish still bite so I think it's a win - win situation. Hey thanks for the experiences it helps my decision out.
Hey has anyone tried those Shasta releases at Sportsmans Warehouse? I just picked one up so I can have two riggers this weekend. Now I got them I'm not sure I should have they look sort of lame but they didn't have any of the good ones. Oh well live and learn. Later J [signature]

Hey I missed this reply but that sounds great if we get time at DAV, I hope you can show me how to set the adjustments on the release. Thanks J
