Brookies and Bulls
#1
Got to sluff off work today and spent the day with the little man. We caught a ton of brookies and got to see some nice bulls. We caught all of the fish using a fly and bubble. They hit the zebra midge dropper more often than the renegade/ant attractor. I didn't even get my fly rod out of the case because it was so fun just taking turns with my son.

It was quite the experience coming up on the 2 bulls in the middle of the trail. We waited a little before cautiously side-stepping them.

All-in-all, it was a great day in the mountains and my boy said it was the greatest place ever!!!!

The boy and that bull moose...I sure HOPE there was some photo shop done there.

Stay clear of those big guys and gals!

Politics aside..WAY TO GO DAD! Mission accomplished...you got the little one into the passion of "catching". Just so you know, now you are going to have to buy this kid fishing gear till he is 18. You're fishing expenses are likely to double...if not triple. Worth every penny I bet!

The brookies are bigger in there for sure but the action is a bit less. Quality over quantity.

Stay way clear of those moose. They attack and kill more people than bears and mountain lions combined in North America. My only semi close call with an animal was with a flying moose coming toward me in the Uintas. All the bears and mtn lions I've ever encountered have fled with out any concern for my safety. I also put a tree or other solid object between myself and moose. I saw this handout while visiting Wrangell St Elias Park a couple weeks ago and thought it provided good advise http://www.nps.gov/wrst/planyourvisit/moose-safety.htm
At least the ears on that moose are up and not straight back but I would never push my luck.

I've spent a lot of time afield with moose, especially in Alaska, and have a pretty good idea when they're getting squirly. These guys were on the trail and were not leaving anytime soon. After watching them for over 20 minutes, I could tell they more interested in salad than us. Consequently, we picked our spot, made our way past them, and got some great pictures of the encounter.

I know that wild animals are just that, but it is what it is. Everytime we are afield, we take chances but hopefully they're calculated and you do your best with what you're dealt. Had it been a cow and calf, our actions would have been much different.

Great report, looks like a fun place to be and take your kid for some memorable 'venturing.

Plus you know the saying, "if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy". Some things you don't mess with!

Unless my friend is wrong or that lake isn't the lake I think it is, I thought he said you weren't allowed to fish that lake.

It must'nt be the lake you think. The lakes in this area are totally legal. The lakes you're thinking of are about 3-4 miles northeast of these.

I have heard of these lakes to the northeast and the fish that exist there.

Every person I have heard of that tried the banned lakes was chased offf ASAP by the land owner. Trust me this guy and his son wouldn't have made it 5 mins on the banned lakes.

Nope, the lake we fished was perfectly legal and quite popular. Don't know where anyone got the idea we were fishing private grounds.
