Sand Hollow - 8/14 -16 2012 First Time
#1
Well I got hooked into going to Saint George for a family and friend get together for a week but managed to sneak away to Sand Hollow in my tube a couple of times. It was awfully hot tor this mountain boy so I quite at about 1pm. but WOW what a great fishery! [shocked] Got there about 10:30 and fished until about 12;30 (got hot, hot)., but caught about 8 and 6 were between 13-17". Now that's a brag for me for a first time going blind!!
Tried to go the next day and tried a bit further up the dike but not nearly as good, although I caught about 8 again but only 1 over 12".
I provided some meals for the rest of the folks both days so all was good. Luckily not everyone liked fish.
Fished along the dike with sinkos, wacky hooked. What I did notice, about noon, fishing went off, went deep? Next time I'll go early or late, if there is a next time.

I may have to try that hole if the weather ever cools down.
A float tube works well there cause you can cool down in the water. Sand Hollow really gets hot in the fall.

[Sad]. It is a great fishery but not if people keep, and eat the bass. Utah doesn't Really stock bass like they do trout.... slimers are for keeping bass are for releasing. Just my point of view. Those pics are depressing

Good question!

The basslammer seems more like a bass hugger to me. Seriously isn't the limit just 1 over 12 inches, and 6 total? Great now that an old timer kept his limit over a single weekend, Sand Hollow is now a dead zone.....thats right completely bassless....Heaven forbid that Leaky kept a limit of fish for the family and friends table that he was visiting...poor form leaky....poor form.

Here we go... hopefully Cliff is on vacation and this post will bury itself before he gets back. hahahaha

To each thier own. And to each, thier own opinions. Just as we think it is ok to keep fish, it is ok for him to think otherwise. He did it just fine. posted his opinion, didn't single anyone one out or bash anyone.

Play nice..

Didn't single anyone out eh? Hmm, looking at what the bass hugger said he was singling out Leaky. Maybe when Mr. Bleeding heart bass boy gets to be half the fisherman Leaky is he can open his bucket mouth to him, but till then he should keep fishing Sand Hollow before it is all gone.

The sky is falling bass slammer, the sky is falling![crazy]

Since this is my post, I kind of thought I should post some comments.

Everyone is entitled to their own point of view, that's the purpose of posting on the forum !!!! But, ------------. why choose to throw a wet blanket on a wonderful experience where I was able to catch some wonderful fish for a great 2 meals for friends and relatives that thoroughly enjoyed the treat???? It's not like there aren't a lot of bass there and the folks encourage keeping some!!!

Let me say this much, I do practice selective harvest and only keep enough for 1 meal only for the wifey and me on my regular trips. This was a once in a life time trip and I had a wonderful time.
I do think you need to choose your battles better, so you don't appear to be an elitist that can't accept a fellow fisherman's good judgement who doesn't abuse the fishery. ---------, or is it you don't like eating fish and just can't accept good harvest practices of others?

Being new to fishing for over a year now, I have a question about the DWR rules for 2012.

I noticed that in the reservoirs and streams in Southern Utah that there is a no limit harvest on smallmouth bass. Is this because they have been illegally stocked? Or is there another reason the DWR wants to encourage taking smallmouth bass?

Leaky, I enjoyed your post and I am glad you had a good meal with the family. My only concern about Sand Hollow is the mussels that are there but I'm thinking about giving it a shot when the weather is cooler.

RE"I noticed that in the reservoirs and streams in Southern Utah that there is a no limit harvest on smallmouth bass. Is this because they have been illegally stocked? Or is there another reason the DWR wants to encourage taking smallmouth bass? "

Two reasons, one is that they were indeed illegally stocked and second, they are very concerned about some endemic fish that are on the endangered species list in the drainage. They fear the smallies could take them out.

Being a bass fisherman at heart, and having Sand Hollow as my home lake...I can say, as long as you kept to the limit, who cares honestly. That lake is so full of bass, its ridiculous! The spawns there are epic...ensuring that the bass will be there for a long time to come. I just chose not to keep LMs because they don't taste very good to me...now the crappies, that's a different story! [Wink]

This is a conversation I've had a million times while I lived in Kentucky, the LM meca of the world (IMO)! I always said, and will continue to say, to each their own as long as their own is within the legal limits. Sounds like a good day at SH Leaky...I just recently purchased a house 1 mile from SH, and am loving the proximity to what I consider the best LM lake in this region...oh yeah, and I'm just 4 miles from Quail...another bonus!
