Fished the Atlantic Ocean (my first time) last Wednesday for about 10 minutes. Never got a bite. Watched about 10 anglers fish for approximately 45 minutes and no one caught a fish. Saw a couple anglers leave with a few fish, so they must have been biting, at least a little, earlier. Asked a local how large of fish that they caught there and he said most were around 10" long with a few going as long as 12". He told me what the fish were called, but with my halfeimers I don't remember their name. Perhaps Troll can help me out.
Maybe they were biting somewhere else in the Atlantic Ocean, but they weren't biting where I was.

Good for you Kent. Were you fishing from a pier? When I fished from a party boat off the coast of Virginia years ago, we caught a fish called a Croaker, I think they also have Sea Trout there as well but those are not that much different, in appearance anyway, than fresh water trout from what I remember.

I was fishing off of a sea wall (or is it an ocean wall?) on the south shore of Long Island, N.Y.. A guy just handed me his rod and I told him that I didn't have a license and he said I didn't need one. Hope he was right and I didn't want to hog his rod so I just fished about 10 minutes.

As I recall you do not need a license to fish salt water in NY this year. you did a few years ago but it changed. There is a free registry like the HIP that anglers are supposed to use though.

They were probably fishing for any number of ocean surf panfish. The fishing will be hit and miss but when a school moves through fish can be caught every couple of minutes.
Kent, the striped bass and bluefish should be moving through soon. The farther out the island the better for them. Look for some long island striper forums for up to date info. Also consider a party boat trip out of Montauk for them. Fall is the best time of year with big fish heading south with the feed bag on.

Could have been scup porgies or snapper blues. Those tended to be on the smaller side. Now full size blues, those are some tough fish.
