I'd like to try fishing for some crappie in a few days. Trying to get rid of a cold so I thought I'd prepare some leader lines with some jigs on them. I have a few questions so here it goes.
[ol][li]Do I use 4lb or 6lb leader line?[/li][li]3-4 feet of leader line?[/li][li]Fish from the shore or take pontoon boat since the fish are supposed to be in the shallows?[/li][li]Do I use a float or fish from the bottom with a sinker?[/li][li]Since strikes very subtle so do I fish with only one pole? [/li][/ol]
I appreciate the help in advance. This is a new experience so I want to gather some infor before going fishing.

I personally would go with 4 lb leader at 4 ft. Take the pontoon just in case, I find it easier to cast toward shore and reel out than reel toward shore. Depending on depth and jig weight try jig weight only if needed add some weight. And personal preference I use 1 rod but have multiple with different rigs.
Good Luck where are you going?

I was planning on going to Gunlock to avoid the PWC crowd. I don't know if it would be better to launch the pontoon boat by the campground or use the boat ramp by the blacktop. That ramp is not very wide and other boaters may want to use it as well. Don't you kind of have to find the right depth and then anchor and fish in that spot once you find a fish? With the pontoon boat I can go deeper if I have to. I seem to have less snags when I use my boat.

I was thinking kick boat not full sized. I usually stick with being close to shore tactics. I've never been to gunlock so post on how it goes.

I've been getting into a few this summer - some on spinner/blade rigs, others on jigheads with a curly tail grub. But since we're mixing it up with bass, and who knows what - I like 6-8lb.
The one thing I've noticed about Crappie is they seem to like more action, Bluegills will nibble at something hanging under a bobber, but Crappie seem more reactive. Maybe a slip bobber, and play it so you get action.
But several times - I unclip the bobber, and then I get the bump-de-bumps.
Some of my angling friends like to tie on two curly tails and drag them both in. You can put out two color options that way.
Other times - downsizing has helped, even put out ice-jigs, and they got nailed.
Go with the float - you get more options and access I'd think. You can always park and pitch if you want.
