drumking, Nickajack tailwaters, Crappie mostly, 14 Oct 2012, Bent Rod and Sauger
#1
Total fish today: Crappie 65 (48 keepers), 2 Rock bass, 2 Catfish, about 5 white/yellow bass.

I met Bent Rod and Sauger at the Nickajack dam this morning for some crappie fishing. It was a little windy at first, but manageable. We idled around with the scanner on, looking for schools of crappie. We located some in different positions at the dam. Went into the old lock area to find Yellburt sitting in the back like a Mother hen sitting on eggs. There were about 3 or 4 more boats in there as well. We only stayed in this place for a few minutes. We caught the white/yellow bass and 10 small crappie and decided to go look for more fish where it was less crowded.

Good move. The area that we scanned last week that showed some fish had more fish there today, so we eased the trolling motor down and began fishing. We probably caught more white crappie today than black crappie. All fish were deep, practically on the bottom. The bite was light most of the time. Hi Vis yellow line helps in detecting bites when the fish are so timid. We fished about 4 hours total fishing time. We spent some time just riding around looking for schools of fish.

1/16 oz jigs with Bobby Garland plastics were all that we threw. I stayed with the 2" Shad in Ghastly Minnow and Screamer colors and Sauger fished with Ghost mostly. Rick fished with Screamer, Bone White/chartreuse, and Electric Chicken. Today, the fish seemed to hit any color, but Ghastly Minnow color was best. At least I fished it 80% of the time.

We need to do this again soon, Rick. Thanks for taking me fishing today. Note: I did remember to bring my crappie bag and rods today. emoBigSmile emoGeezer We all laughed, talked, and told old stories and fishing tales. Much fun.
