Lower Provo Help
#1
My brother-in-law has always been jealous that I had waders and all the fly fishing gear. He is brand new to fly fishing. And I am no expert but I have gone quite a bit

I helped him out and got hims some waders this Christmas and he got a rod. Now he wants me to take him out this weekend.

I know it is cold but I think we can have some fun.

What patters/flies would be best to get him some fish? I haven't fished in the winter much, so any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Eric

This weekend is going to give new meaning to the word Cold. Careful with your rod. I have seen many tips break from iced guides.
Sow bug, red copper John, zebras, maybe try San Juan Worm. Stay warm.

if it were me i would wait a few days until it gets back up in the 30's, your going to have constant ice ups. if you dont care then for flies.... this time of year myself personnaly, i like to go super tiny.... red copper johns on top, zebra midges on bottom. think small, have fun, and welcome your brother to the sickness that is fly fishing

I second waiting til it warms up. I fish 12 months of the year but when its this cold its not worth it. Not only will you guides be constantly iced up but your line will freeze and you are basically casting a long icicle. Wait til it warms up a bit.

The browns were spawning well into December. Watch where you walk and you might catch some on glowbugs. Small olive hares ear works well too.
