Don't post much, because so many others are doing what I do, and often better. But FINALLY hit the ice after being sicker than I've ever been since early Dec. I'm just so happy it finally happened. Cold, though.
Walked out onto the S side of Cemetery Pt about 2:30 pm, having always previously fished at the W tip or N side before. It was very cold for a sunny afternoon. One guy on the ice who packed up moments later, got me dialed in early. He had fished a couple slow hours then someone ELSE got him on perch meat, and he had a nice little pile for his last hour. They were frozen solid.
I just moved into some open holes, and later his holes an hour or so after he left. Never used the auger. Bites were weird. Not light at all, but like the fish were nibbling kinda hard then spitting it right out. Grab, two tiny tugs real fast, then run away laughing. No spring bobbers needed, but hard to get the timing right. Eventually managed to start pulling em out regularly. Almost every drop, but usually a couple of whiffs first. It was pretty cold.
Ended with 28 I think, fishing from 2:30 to 5:45 about, right about 7", not much bigger or smaller. Ate all the jigs I dropped, despite the cold; purple and pink teardrops, orange and gold forage minnows, and some spoons, rigged with hooks like a Hali-jig, tipped with perch pieces and eyes. Cold. Bitter cold.
30' of water, maybe? never checked, seems like lots of fish out on that flat, bites in every bole I tried. So cold I spent a lot of time managing skim ice on the holes and in guides, and I always forget how early the sun drops behind that one big knob of a mountain. Cold.
Still really glad I went. Dress for it and have a good time. Sorry, no pics. Everything works on my phone but the camera after getting it wet.
