Pinview perch beginner
#1
I plan to take my kids out for a little perch action at Pineview this weekend. The question is what is the best jig setup for them? Any information would be helpfull. I just dont want to take the kids out in the cold and have a slow day. I want them to want to come back.

Try using a small Kastmaster or Swedish Pimple and add a second ice fly like an Atomic Ant, Rat Finkie, or Gizzy Bug about 12" below it.
Tip both with either wax worm, meal worm, small piece of crawler, or Perch eyes or meat.

The most important thing to do is to be sure that you are fishing on the bottom. Let your line fall all the way down until it makes contact with the bottom. Now bring the lures up just enough to have them both slightly off the bottom. No more than 6" for the bottom lure.

Use a strike indicator and watch for any slight movement of the indicator. This may be all you will get for a bite.

Drop the lures down so there is contact with the bottom every 20 or 30 seconds. This causes a mud cloud and gets the Perch's attention. Now lift the lures back up just off the bottom and watch for a strike.

Look for water that is about 30' deep to start. Watch others as they are fishing and try to be at the same depth that they are fishing.
Don't be afraid to ask others what and how they are doing.

If you are not getting bites within 1/2 hour, move and try again.

1.)Use the lightest weight line possible and the smallest jig - must be baited (below a heavier bottom-seeking lure or weight). Drop till the heavier weight hits bottom then s-l-o-w-l-y lift up and watch for the bite.

2.)After catching your first perch I'd recommend tipping with eyeballs - they last longer and you won't have to keep the kids re-baited.

3.)Pre-rig all of your rods.

4.) Have fun.

I fished there today. The fishing is hot, and the air is cold. It was -5° and pea-soup fog at nine this morning when I got there. It warmed up to 12° by noon, and the sun felt great. There were two small girls having a hoot of a time playing on the ice by then, so kids can handle it - as long as there's sun and no wind.

As to fishing, I started with Berkeley Gulp maggots and it took me an hour to catch the first perch. The moment I switched to small strips of perch meat, the action was non-stop.

Fun Anecdote: guys near me were catching perch as fast as they could get their jigs down (each of the three caught 100+ and kept 50 each) and for no special reason, I wondered aloud how come we never catch any of ther bazillion smallmouth bass that are in Pineview. I had hardly said it when one guys' rod took on a scary bend and line tore from his drag. It took him several minutes, but he finally iced an 18" smallmouth! For an encore, he later noticed a suspended fish on his flasher and raised his jig to tempt it. WHAMMO! a two-pound catfish. Honest.

I came home with 25 7" perch and put back a bunch of smaller ones.

Honest to Hoozbygah.

Yeah yeah Rocky - but a story is a story, what no pix for proof!

Just ribbing. Hoping to make it down Monday and prove it to myself! Sounds like a fun outing. And to think - some folks don't like Perch. Jeepers!

Not to hijack the thread...here you go CS PICS...we had a breakfast date at Beez Cafe in Roy and then a fishing date with these fine gents.

Now I didn't ask permission to post these pics and I'm hoping Big Earl The Lion King (note hat) of Pineview yesterday won't mind.

Ya just never know what may tug on the ole line...Perch fishing was non-stop nothing consistently huge but my partner did manage a Perch pushing 10" and several others pushing 8.5"...all others and majority were 7.5" as TD would say cookie cutter Perch.[Wink]

PICS:

Now our take for the fillet knife and as my Daughter says body bagging:

[inline Mess-O-Perch.jpg]

We plan on being on PV tomorrow, somewhere will have ice chariot.[cool]

Sure hope orginial poster had a very nice time on PV with the kiddos...the Perch fishing at least for us yesterday was non-stop...larger ones are in there but don't plan on consistent larger Perch unless one finds the under water Jumbo Perch highway...a great adventure for kids though and for those of us who find Perch worth the time on the hard deck, non-stop action and a mighty fine and very tasty fish. We had a great time and caught a limit of perch. My little boy told me that it was the best fishing trip he had been on. I think he mostly liked watching the fire department practicing their ice rescue techniques at cemetery point[cool]

[size 3][/size]Thanks everyone for the pointers. It couldn't have worked out any better.

Two other items to add:

Of the 25 perch I cleaned after that trip, 23 were full of eggs and only two were male. Odd to get that high of a female to male ratio, at least to me.

Second, that bass was outta sight delicious. We baked it with a dab of butter and some seasoned salt on each fillet. My wife now has another favorite target species for me to bring home as table fare.

I'll second this. I sliced open 25 or so and at least 20 had eggs in 'em.

Good to see that you had a fun and successful day on the ice. I hope you have many more.

There is a big Ice Party this Saturday at Strawberry. It's hosted by Channel 5 and Adam Eakle. If you can, try to attend it. There will be people there giving tips on fishing at Strawberry and Ice Fishing in general, along with some very nice door prizes.
