Bear Lake--- the good and the bad

The good- I made the 30 min drive over the hill to try my luck, never caught a Mac before. Managed to put this on the ice.


We were on the west side just north of the rest area in 40 FOW

The bad- we hooked into 4 others but they came undone.
Overall it was a pretty slow day.

The worst- I was using a 6" tube jig with a stinger hook, the fish I landed completely engulfed it (hammered it hard) it was hooked deep on the stinger and the main jig hook tore a gill loose, it was bleeding badly before I ever got it to the hole. I felt bad but I had to keep it.

Congrads on your first mack, looks like a nice one, as far as you having to keep it, well, it is the chance you take when you fish and it happens from time to time, at least your will be able to see how they taste.

sounds about like my day, well except for icing a big fish. Went up with Ktrout (thanks man!) and we were in about the same area, bit deeper at 50 ft. Kory nailed a cisco, and I had two hookups, and they were NOT cisco - after a day of hauling up perch en-mass, it was nice to feel some serious weight on the line.
Not sure, but I think one off the bottom was a Whitefish, and one running about 40 feet down - I popped up, taunted him, and got BIT. Just as a reached to lift the transducer out of my hole, pop - he's off. Grrr!

Had a chance to meet BearLakeFishguy - and they were doing quite well on the Whities. Guess I need to learn that lake better.

I suppose it wasn't too bad of a trip for me, we only fished for four hours, got to spend some time on the ice with some good friends while sipping a couple of cold ones and I caught the biggest fish that I have ever caught in the lower 48. The way we were rigged up we didn't expect to catch a mess o fish but what action we did have got the blood pumping. I just regret killing a fish that I intended to release.
