A question on Minersville
#1
With ice off (hopefully) approaching, I am planning on fishing Minersville at the end of March. I was curious what the experience of others has been fishing here. I have been looking through the old threads about it, but haven't seen too many. I will be using flies and spinners, and was curious what has worked for others in the past. Also, how crowded can it get there at Minersville?

Minersville is one of my favorite spring fisheries...and, this year should be an exceptionally good and exciting one. Spring fishing at Minersville is not much different than summer fishing at Minersville it is generally uncrowded with ample space to do your thing...besides primarily fly fishing, I have also enjoyed using crankbaits. The trout really hit them well at times and with the nice smallmouth and now wipers, crankbaits in the spring could catch just about anything!

I like throwing wooly buggers, zonkers, and egg-sucking leeches in the spring. As far as crankbaits go, I like using jointed rapalas that are suspending--they run 3-5 feet underwater. Generally, in the spring time, the trout are in their pre spawn or spawn mode and are congregated in shallow water along gravel points or shorelines. I would concentrate on these areas. The SMB will be looking to move up into warmer water and also in pre-spawn mode. The wipers will probably be hardest to catch...I haven't had any luck on wipers until the water warms up into the upper 50s and lower 60s. But, you never know...

An egg sucking leach with sinking line always brings in fish. Do you plan on fishing from shore or a tube or boat? i have a go to crank that will always work there for the larger trout, but not willing to give it up over the forum if you want it i would be happy to share info through a pm.

Good luck!

Maribou jigs do very well there in the Spring in 4-12' of water. Of coarse, they work well everywhere for trout.

[/#0000ff][/quote]Not quite sure, but over the last 20 years or so I've been using jigs as my go-to trout getters. Then a few years ago I met this big ole' toe-head named Pat that turned me on to the finest most beautiful maribou jigs I ever laid eyes on. A whole new level of jigging began.
I'll be calling ya soon. Ice-out's a comin'.

I had great success using Maniac Minnows on an 1/8 oz head on Minersville last Fall.

Here is my report from the trip I took down there last year around the same time as you are planning on going down. I can say if the fishing is good you will see plenty of anglers out there. Who knows my report also may give you a few ideas on what else and where else you can go down there too.
