Starvation Perch Video Feb 23
#1
Hit Starvation for a couple hours to get some fishing in and take some video. As soon as we dropped the camera down there were good numbers of perch around. We had a heck of time getting them to bite anything. As you can see in the video they were very hesitant. A lot of them appear to be jumbos. The one we got one video being caught was 10" and loosing eggs. Enjoy

watching your video (which is awesome) i had an idea, the jigging of your jigs resembeled the swimming action of the plankton swimming in front of your camera! wonder if that is a trigger for them?

Yea, I don't know. We tried putting different action to the jigs to get strikes but it just wasn't working. We were fishing in the middle of the day so that might have something to do with it although perch usually bite all day for us. We'll be back soon to give it another try. Might just have to check out the smaller perch in Indian and see what footage we get there.

What a great toy you got there! I'm jelly. Would love to have a camera. I think one could learn a great deal by using one.

Puzzling they weren't eating. I bet you did, but I would have dropped a half worm right on the bottom and left it, the way those guys were so stubborn

BTW, I finally got around to trying a dropshot for perch at Pineview this year. I get tired of tiny lures taking forever to sink, and trying to make sure I'm right close to the bottom. I tied one of those pear-shaped sinkers right on the end of my line and added a tiny teardrop jig maybe 7" up on a very short side dropper, less than an inch. Then I hooked maybe 1/3 nightcrawler through the.middle, "wacky" style. That caught fish, so I tried a section of power worm, the little skinny ones in the jar, and that worked great, and so I tried a Gulp minnow, a tiny one, and that worked, and so did a waxie through the head and a perch eye. So, yeah, they were already biting, but I liked being able to be sure.I was on the bottom and then just sort of shiver and bounce my line, making the bait twitch in place and not have to make big bounces while jigging.

I'll try it on fussy perch sometime.=D, maybe another tool in the box.

Nice, what kind of camera do you guys have? Very clear video, I have toyed with the idea of getting one at some point.

Bigbites,

How deep were you with your camera? I got a camera but lot of times putting it down you don't see much yours looked real clear and bright. Just wondering? I love to use them buck shot rattle spoons. Just for a hint try a gizzy bug with a Perch eye when they are in-active like that. Video was real cool. You keep doing it out there your gonna see the big ole' Walleye come sit on your Jig and then you're going to get excited. Thanks for sharing the video.

I was wondring the same thing. At around 30-40' it starts getting real hard to see much of anything let alone see it in color.

Great video. Thanks for sharing.

That is some cool video for sure, thanks for sharing it. The storm that came through might have had something to do with the slow bite. I'm also interested in the depth you were fishing and the type of camera you were using.

Glad you enjoyed the video. We have a lot of fun with the camera. Thanks for the tips and advise. Pikeman, we did try the gizzy bug and perch eye but it was after most of the perch had moved on. We were fishing in 28' of water and used the new Aqua Vu micro plus DVR camera.

Like I said before, awesome video, have you ised it to the 50 ft. that it can reach? if so, how is the picture that deep?

Just a suggestion, try pounding the bottom a couple times and let the jig lay there on the bottom for a bit. I also like to dead stick at times when they are like that. I know when I fished C.J. a couple weeks ago they pretty much wanted the bait dead sticked a couple inches off the bottom, sometimes it would take 5 minutes or so before they would hit it of course up there we could use 5 rods and I would work a pole for a minute or so then move to another rod. These were the jumbos from 11 to 13 inches. Springbuck's suggestion has worked for me in the past as well of using a bell sinker on the bottom with your bait tied 6 inches or so above. Great pictures, the wife and I each have cameras but the pictures don't come in as clear as yours, thanks for sharing and good luck on your next trip.

That is a great video. I first saw it on YouTube when I was searching for ice fishing videos at Starvation Reservoir. Though they weren't biting it sure is neat to watch the Perch with an underwater camera. Thank you for sharing.

I'm heading down there tomorrow..hopefully I catch more than a cold.

Hint: Use a jig like one of TD's glow wobblers as your drop-shot weight. And tie in the ice fly in true drop-shot fashion with a palomar knot - no dropper. Tip both jig and fly.

A dropper masks the perch's very subtle bite, and having a jig as well as a fly doubles your attraction and bite potential. You might even tie in two flies now that three lures are allowed. The jig should be the heaviest lure, with the other(s) progressively smaller/lighter.

Hey slimmer, it was good to meet you on Starv. The video was posted by BIGbites (my 14 year old). It was definately a timing thing. This video was taken at noon on Saturday. Yesterday (Monday) when I met you, as you know the perch were very willing to hit a Kastmaster and perch eye earlier in the morning, but by about 11am the bite slowed way down and they were back to blowing kisses at the jig instead of attacking it. I caught 21 in about two hours. I think 15 of those came in the first half hour. Not as fast as other areas of the lake. I plan to post up the video of hungry Starvation perch in another thread.

MrRojoneck and others thanks for the complements on the video. It is just a raw clip (no editing). When I get more time (after ice fishing season) I plan to do some editing of the clips we have taken at various lakes during the season and post to the forum.

Bowhunter, we have put the camera down to about 40' at the Gorge looking at structure for burbot fishing in the late afternoon and the camera performed very well. We could see good detail even though the water at the Gorge is murkier. We even got some footage of a pup laker playing with the tube jig for 5 minutes and a burbot being caught.
