I have been slaying the bear lake whitefish -boom !
(They are spawning) that's why the lake is slow folks)
But they stink like a stink that is fowl stank of stanks,
I catch big bonevilles whites that never stink, and delicious to the taste of whitefish!
Does any one have any preference on Wich one tastes better?

That is interesting since I've never noticed one (Bear Lake or Bonneville) that stinks. With the sun we've been having on Bear Lake lately, did you allow your fish to remain on the ice in the sun? Even though its been colder than cold, the part facing the sun can warm up and start to rot even with the other side being frozen to the ice. I put my fish in the shade, bury them under the snow or in a bucket out of the direct sun. Sometimes the larger Bonneville WF that eat fish can smell pretty ripe, but that is just the 1/2 digested fish in their stomachs and if you hit the stomach with your knife when cleaning them, they can stink.

You probably hit it right in the head, it was the larger bear lake whites that were stinky, the real small ones did not stink?
Do you have a preference on Wich one tastes better?
I usually realeas small whites , so I mainly have been eating boneville whites, I decided to keep some smaller ones to eat.

Hey fish guy, I was wondering how much longer the whities are gonna be running. Is it better in the morning or later in the day for them?

Don't know who you are, but there is nothing wrong with killing a spawning fish. There are plenty of whitefish in Bear Lake, and catching them on the spawn is not going to hurt anything. [mad] [crazy]

Tell me, where does it say in the proc, that I can't harvest whitefish durring thier 4 month spawn ?
And I really didn't have time to count the scales on every fish , to distinguish a boneville white fish( that spawns in December) from a bear lake whitefish that has started to spawn!
So next time you want to make fun of someone, do your homework !

Now that I have calmed down a little,
Let me apologize for the harsh words previously written down above,
First I would like to take note that I particularly don't kill every fish I catch.
Second to call every person that has caught sisco on bear lake, how ever they do it ( dip net, snagging ) - calling them Stupid is very offensive !
Sisco are spawning when people harvest them.
Along with a large amount of most fish are being caught during thier spawns!
I think it comes down to : people don't have the right to bully or tell other people how stupid they are, especially if they are not breaking the law!
I have no right to tell you how to fish or what to keep, so don't tell me!
BOOM!

First time poster here. Just thought I would give my .02 here. I believe this post was about whitefish, and which was better eating. I would like opt hear everyone's opinion about what fish is better to eat. I love to catch and eat whitefish. both taste good to me, but I get more meat for my limit out of the Bonneville.
In regards to catching them while they are spawning..... does it really matter? There is only about 5 or 6 weeks a year when they can be effectively targeted. The pressure during those 6 weeks is usually focused on trout. I highly doubt that a few limits of whitefish during a 6 week period is going to crash the species.
If people are going to catch grief about fishing for them during their spawns, we just as well stop fishing all together. Rainbows and Cutts spawn in the spring, so we had better not fish for them anywhere they exist during that time. Perch and Burbot are winter spawners so we had better not ice fish for them either. Blue gills in the spring are fun to fish for, but they are spawning so we had batter not fish for them, and bass too while we are at it.
It all boils down to being a responsible angler, and not keeping our limits of fish every day, or every weekend for that matter, that we go out. I love to catch all fish, but will sometimes keep a single fish, sometimes a limit. Trophy fish always go back if they have the power to swim off on their own.
I'm more concerned about the guys that are exceptional fishermen that keep their limit of big fish every time they go out, regardless of when those particular fish are spawning. They are not breaking the law though, so I won't criticize them for their actions
Sorry for the vent. Too many people on this site jump on people for their right to fish, and harvest fish.

I have no suggestions on that one. I'd imagine it'd taste like mud, fish slime and guano.
The only thing those are good for is bait and fertilizer. Kind of concerning that it came out of Blue. Hope this isn't going to be another Strawberry, Scofield or Joe's Valley Chub boom!

Uh oh,
You said it first!
Oh I got a chub this weekend.
And its not the kind you usually get on Bear Lake!
Yes it is concerning that a chub of this magnitude was caught on Bear lake.

chubs are native to bear lake. If that one grew to that size he is just like all his ancestors before him for many thousands of years.

I have heard (i'd like to know if it an accurate statement) that the chub population is on the rise in Bear Lake. That they have had more in their nets than ever before. I have been fishing Bear Lake for 20 years and that is the first one I have ever personally seen. Heard of them in there, but never seen it.
I personally think they are getting in from the Bear River when they pump water out of the lake, which they have been doing a lot of lately.

I did a gill net survey with Bearlakefishguy last fall and he told me that when the water level in high in BL the chub numbers increase. We netted a lot of chubs last fall, so their number up.
