Mead 3-29-13

Been almost a month! Way too long. Work, family stuff, etc, etc.

Anyways hit the water at sunrise and off at sunset. 20 landed. 15 LMB, 4 SMB and 1 Striper.

Water temp was 60 at sunrise and 62-68 depending on which cove one was in later in the afternoon.

Figured the fish would be moving up not on the bed already. Wasted the first half of the day doing the normal stuff a ways out verse getting up in there. It wasn't till nearly one in the afternoon before I realized they were bedding already. (I got close to a flat and seen a Smallie bed. I was DUHHH.) I should of looked earlier. We spent the rest of the afternoon looking for beds and fishing much shallower. Not a whole lot of beds though. I am thinking just a few moved up in the last few days. The wave is still a bit off. I caught/seen several Smallies staking out their territory but no bed made yet. I never saw a LMB bed all day but in the back of most coves a pair of LMB could be found. WAY hard to catch. I was throwing everthing at them and never caught one when I found a pair together. I did catch a couple LMB back in coves that weren't paired up yet.

Spinnerbait fish earlier in the day.

Another dropshot LMB.

Madi's new personal best (PB) SMB. 3 1/4 pounds. Texas rigged craw.

A decent SMB. (Dropshot I think)

One coat of sunscreen... Not enough [pirate]

It wasn't enough for her to catch her new PB SMB... She had to up it in the same day. By a POUND. 4 1/4 pounds. (Dropshot)

Dang... Just ran back through some old posts and wouldn't you know it the big Smallie I caught last month was just shy of 4 pounds. I thought it was 4 1/2. I suppose old age and memory loss is to blame. Now I have to tell her tomorrow that she has the biggest SMB between the two of us. Tough one to live down [crazy]

Now thinking about it she has caught the biggest Striper, biggest SMB and biggest Trout in our boat. That leaves me with one title... Biggest LMB. Even tougher to live down if I tell her [Smile]

Ah forgot to mention... I ran into a entire school of BIG Stripers out there Friday. Like 10-30 pounders. +/- 20 of them. Odd place. Odd scenerio, etc. Wasn't looking for Stripers that is for sure. I had made a cast into some rocky shallows with a squarebill and on the way back to the boat it got into deeper water. As I am watching it come back a fish is following/chasing my squarebill. I was what in the heck is that carp doing. They run from anything in the water then it took a swipe at it and just bumbed it (I had a hook in him for 2-3 seconds before it pulled out) and turned. That is when I realized it was a HUGE Striper not a Carp. We stayed in the area looking around for a bit and shortly there after I see the big school of 'em but I couldn't get them to go for anything I had laying on deck. I also seen the single several other times that had hit my squarebill but again not interested in anything else I had tied on at the time. Would of been a hoot... Oh well.

What part of the lake were you fishing for LMB in? And why do you say it was unusual seeing the stripers? Was the school in super shallow water?

I launched out of Echo.

A school of 10-30 pound only sized Stripers, no dinks. I don't think I have ever seen a post like that irt Lake Mead. That made it unusual.

Nice fish. [fishin] The smallies are really getting big. I imagine that record will fall soon.

I'm not even sure what the record is... I've seen several different numbers listed. 5lb 1oz is listed on several sites for Nevada when you do a search and 8lb 11oz is what is listed in the 2013 Nevada Fishing Guide. 5.63 is what Justin Kerr caught on Havasu which is listed as the Colorado River System record.

If one goes by 5lb 1oz or even 5lb 6oz I too believe that can be beat this year between Mead and Havasu.

Speaking of records, I was looking at Whizzle's sticky post of fishable waters in NV. Did you guys notice the record Rainbow out of Sunset Pond was over 12 lbs??? How the hell did that happen? I imagine those planters get caught within days of being planted. The damn pond is only 12 feet deep in some parts! [fishon]

The hatcheries keep what they call Brooder fish. They are big, genetically bad-ass fish that they use for reproduction at the hatcheries. Every now and then, they stock some of the older brooders, and there you have it. A 12 pounder swimming around in the local ponds.

I know way back when I was still in High School fishing the trout plants at Lorenzi Park, I was walking by one of the airerators to keep the water moving, I saw a trout just swimming the current and it had to be 12+ lbs. I tried everything to get it and basically said F*** YOU!

I bet there are a couple monsters in both Floyd Lamb and Sunset. I can't wait for them to finish the renovations at Lorenzi and start stockings there again.
