Well, I busted my 30-40 year old cheapo fly reel (probably about $10) so I'd thought I'd check out a new one. WOW, Have no idea what to buy, Went to Cabela's web. site and they range from $29.99 to over $800!!!!!!!! I just want a reasonable every day reel for small waters and rivers to reel in my lose line and allow a trout to run a bit. I do most of my fish control by having stripped enough line to control em by finger drag. Surely there is such a reel at a reasonable price for the old fart, but after 40 years, don't know what's reasonable and inexpensive? What price range should I be looking at and maybe a recommended reel??
Surely I should be able to buy a reel for $50 or less that would do just fine. Any suggestions, like - Cabella's Prestige for $49.99 or the Phlueger for $34.99. What would be wrong with one of these as an example???

Don't buy any fly reels or rods with a cabelas brand on it !!!!!!!!!! It will just break. Just buy an allen reel. This weeks deal is if you get one of the 2 fly reels you get a free bundle of happy fly line. I'm getting another one soon because my cruddy cabelas fly reel broke again and I'm sick and tired of exchanging there products. I will never buy cabelas brand products ever again.
Trust me I've been to hell and back with there products.

I have an Okuma Reel that I have fished now for 15 years and have never had any trouble with it. It has a great drag and is very sturdy Sportsmans has them for around $35.00.

I second the Okuma. I have a couple of their Sierra models and they work fine for what you've described. I did get a Redington Surge used last year, and I had a couple of trout run me into my backing on it. It worked really well. They run around $80, but you might be able to find one for cheaper.

I've never had a bit of trouble with the Cabelas reel I have and I use it a lot, it wasn't a $20 dollar reel though. I did break a rod once, no problem exchanging it, the rod I had was discontinued so they upgraded me.

Nah not true Majority of Cabelas reels are made by other companies for Example the There WLx is a join venture with Lamson, There Watershed reels was made by Ross,(Ross Rhythm Reel) Even Okuma made some of there reels at one point.
Like all products there tiers in there product line bottom tier reels are made at some factory in China but then again I think like 75 percent of all reels are made in China ....
Any how if your looking for a inexpensive reel the orivs rocky mtn reel is 29 bucks decent reel for 29 bucks
If you want a Cabelas reel the Prestige Premier is a good reel, sealed drag system like the Lamsons ( Not the prestige plus thats a crap reel )
but if you looking in the 100 range FFlover is correct that Allen Trout reel is pretty sweet. The Orivs Battenkill & Ross Fly Rise reels are also in that price range
The Flyrise drag system is identical to its 300 dollar cousin Ross Evolution and the evolution is a kick ass reel.
Ebay has the 1st generation Lamson Konics going for around 50 bucks

Cabelas wind river fly reels are great for the price 30 bucks!! They are a little bulky but there pretty light weight. And have a pretty decent drag.

Sorry if I wasn't that clear. I don't trust cheap cabelas reels at all but if leaky is looking for a good deal a $99 allen reel that come with free fly line right now is an amazing deal. I got on allen reel for sinking line and I'm getting one for floating line this week. They are build strong and they are just wonderful. Never had problems with my Allen year yet. Listening too the soft sounds of tons of line ripping out. [  ]

anotehr thing to consider, your fishing for trout, your reel is basically a line holder. if you were fihsing for wiper, musky, bass, or carp than thats another story. no need to drop a ton of money on a fancy reel when all it does is store your line for you

Yeah some of the older Cabelas product line were crap but if you look at there line up now not bad for the price.. as mention earlier 75% of reels are made over seas. Not saying thats bad just saying they came from a handful of the same factories.

Pa gave me that wind river combo in an 8wt. I have been landing a bunch of mean carp with it. The line was terrible though. Replaced with Sage line and it is a greatc
Combo. Drag is good.
But, Allen reels are my main choice. Like Koch said, just a place to hold your line with a fair drag is a bonus. Now line on the other hand.....

If you want to stay on that $50 range go to fish tech and get yourself a Martin mountain brook reel. It's nothin fancy but it gets the job done... I agree, I still fish my old Sierra Okuma from Sportsman. I have bought more expensive reels since, Ross, Lamson, but I will never again spend that much on reels . For the trout fishing I do that Okuma gets the job done just as well. Have no idea how good the Hendrix Outdoors reels are ,but picked one up at the fly fishing expos for 50.00 with a spare spool. Feels pretty smooth, but have yet to fish it.

WOW, thanks for the response. [  ] Reading all the posts from this and other forums, I've tentatively decided. Can still change my mind since I found an old crappy reel that will make due for a trip of 2.
I've decided based my decision on 1) Just small/med. stream trout fishun in the winter, 2) I pinch pennies 3) Shipping charges on the internet like Cabelas and 4) your input;
I will go to Sportsman's and take a look at the Okumas. Will also look at others in my price range.
W/O going there yet, I'm looking for the Okuma Seirra ($40) or the SLV for ($70). Any comments?
