maybe switch out the detergant you are using for a mild soap like ivory soap or something like that. personally i have gone through a spool of sharskin in a year and that trend continues but i fish ALOT

depends on one of my 294651239651982764587 rods but usually:

Shark Skin (both trout and GPX tapers)
Mastery Series
Hydros 3d
Rio LT (basically on the 1,2,3, and 4 wts only)
Rio Gold
Depth Charge
and Rio Clouser on the 6wt.

A few drops Palmolive in a mostly full kitchen sink of warm water. Rio Gold 85 bucks a line to only get a season out of it crazy last season I didnt fish as much as I have in the past maybe once a week and the entire front section has started to crack. Hmm make me wonder if these lines are worth it any more....

Sinergy,
When you pull line from your reel is the line rubbing against the spool? I compromised my line doing this - premature cracking.

You would think that when you buy a high quality fly line that it would hold up longer. Unfortunately this is usually not the case. The type of materials and polymers that make a high quality line perform better tend to be more subjective to use. All fly lines are essentially plastic and with any type of plastic a lot of factors can cause them to wear out. Heat, dirt, wear and amount of use can cause them to wear out faster. Sunscreen is really bad on fly lines, whether it is a result of over spray or rubbing off your hands and skin onto the fly line. From different sources of information that I have gathered you should be able to get about a year or so out of a good quality fly line.

I think you got a bad batch...it happens. I have gold and have had for 5 years. Looks great. BUT my Deep 7 line is another story. I had it for a couple years and used it very little at that time. I was at the Uinta's last year and I cast out about 30 feet. I noticed what looked like mono stuck to the side. I let out a little more line and then lifted the rod to to get to that piece of mono. The line had separated. About 3 feet worth. I called Rio and told them, they told me to tag it, box it up and send it back. Two weeks later I had brand new Deep 7.
Good luck Sin.

I agree to ditch the detergent. Just very little mild soap is all you should need, if that. I just rinse mine with a soft cloth and warm water once in a while. No soap or cleanser. A few times a season I'll Gink the first few feet to keep it floating high. I'm using DT Orvis Wonderlines from a few years ago for trout. They were blowing them out dirt cheap over the winter, but not sure what, if any, are left.

Other tips: Make sure your reels have a smooth line guard. Try not to step on your line while fishing/wading. Try not to drag it over sharp rocks or hit rocks on your back cast. No sun screen. Really avoid Bug dope. Store in the shade. Dry it after each use.

Orvis always promoted their lines as maintenance free.[Smile]

Shameless promotion! Mine get dirty, so I rinse them. If I'm not fishing daily, I dry them too. I'm a big Orvis fan, as they have taken very good care of me for a very long time[Wink], but no fly line is maintenance free. Those new textured Hydros 3D lines they have are the BOMB for salt water or chucking streamers. Kinda like sharkskin, but quieter and less abrasive. They just sail a good double-haul. I got a Hydros DT-4 Trout Line to fish this upcoming season. Those are promoted as having the Wonderline coating though, so not sure what the real change is besides the little line ID.

I got to agree on everything you have said. I have sinking line from Type II to Type V in four, five and six weight all Orvis. And still using Superfine and Long Belly.
I do have a lot of Rio too, and Airflow and Sage and of course SA. I replace about every three to five years depending on how much I use them. But Orvis has some killer sales.

Rio is really good about that as FG mentioned. For floating line I've got Sharkskin in 3,4,5,6 wts. I know it's expensive ($100) but my 5 wt. Line is 6 or 7 years old now and it's still going strong. Better than any other line I've had. So in reality, it's been the cheapest line I've bought.
