Hey Flynewb,
You don't need to throw streamers all day to catch Trout but you can.
I was on the lower Weber today. I caught about 10 Trout, Cuts and Browns all on nymphs, I did get one little white fish.
Don't be too specific but what general section of the lower Weber were you fishing? What nymph and what size? Small Zebra midge patterns by chance? White fish love the Zebra midge.
I'm interested to hear what other say. It's more common to pick up white fish all day during the winter.

I was by Weber Canyon . I actually was throwing a trio. i did have a zebra. pheasant tail. caddis pupa, they were hitting all three. ( i think i could of put anything on and caught just as many, maybe they aren't as picky or intelligent as trout) Although it seems slightly harder to set the hook with them, maybe because they're mouths are so small or i just suck. I was having fun, but every time i reeled in the catch i was hoping to see some color besides a shimmering silver. Caught some FATTIES Though. It seems like the whites pile up in the faster moving water. I'm still fairly new to fly fishing and more so nymphing, but i'm addicted.

From my experience the only way to not catch white fish is by throwing dry flies. 9/10 times you will hook a trout. They are bottom feeders so you will catch them while nymphing. Other than that it's just a guessing game. I usually average about 50/50 trout and whites. I get pretty sick of catching white fish... Ugly little things.

I have found (not scientifically by any means) that Whities possibly feed below trout so you may want to change the depth of flies, also I have found that Whities seem to be eating different bugs than trout at any given time. Seems to me that some bugs are Whitey specific, on the upper Provo I know that if you tie on a Prince Nymph you will be catching Mr. White.
I don't know though, trial and error, keep at it! I would say just throw streamers but I have caught Whitefish on streamers[crazy]

ive been catching a lot of whitefish and trout on the upper weeb and I noticed if I wanted to target trout more than whitefish nymphing that I would just raise my depths off the bottom a foot or so, you will still get WF if they are aggressive and hitting well but I noticed personally that I picked a few more trout up that way since I wasn't getting all the way to the bottom where the whitefish hang. everybody has there own ways of targeting them.
also plus one on certain flies, some days the whities want little size 22 midge patterns and then somedays big pheasant tails that they can barley suck in there mouth.

If your catching whitefish then soon enough you'll be catching trout. Same Tactics apply to both fish
Just a mental note I have noticed that White fish do take my Prince Nymph over a Hares Ear and vice versa.
But have caught Browns & cuts on both flies.
Also rarely catch Whitefish on a dry [cool]

Funny story, fishing by Taggart a few years ago and the skunk was on, nymphed all day and nothing headed back to the lot and saw that the whole pool was rising fish, figured at least I can get a few trout now, tied on a dry and fish on......was a WF!!! All the rising fish were WF!
Had never seen that before or since[shocked]

White fish love midges, eggs, scuds and Prince nymphs. If you want to catch only trout then throw streamers or dries.
