Try Spiderwire in braids. They cast great and it takes a truck to break them. Just remember to change the knot if you are not tying a polomer.

I use Stren Magnathin in 8# for catfishing...It's about $10...I rarely use anything higher...You just got to know your reel and adjust your drag properly.

Carefully tied knots and a proper drag setting should solve the problem. You can use the cheapest line made and catch plenty if you have these two elements in place.

I feel your pain,
I have that Trilean xl smooth in 10 pound test on two rods and it would break like it was 2 pound test. what a waste. I have bought the trilean XT and it seems ok so far.

First, Trilene XL is strong if used properly. Folks always blame the line they using, but different lines are made for different situations. XL is extra limp, which means it's softer than other lines, and wears out faster. You have to constantly check for nicks, abrasion, weakness, etc..In exchange for that you get the smooth casting. Just like car tires, fishing lines have different characteristics that are more or less useful in certain fishing situations.

If you want both smoothness and strong line, then braid has the best of both worlds. But even braid has a downfall. It's highly visibile in the water and it doesn't stretch. Another one to check out might be Stren Magnaflex. It's supposedly limp, but is designed to be strong as well. Of course, all fishing line companies will tell you their line is the best. It's hard to say what line you will like best, as everybody experiences it differently.

Harlin that highly visable is true only for certain braids and water conditions. I have one that is a yellow color and the wipers at Willard avoid it like it's a fresh water shark. On the other hand the Bass at Jordanelle seem to prefer it over my coploymers. I also have a braid that is moss green works on all slightly colored waters, DC, Starvation, Yuba and the list goes on.

The real down side to braids is they are hard on equipment. The no strecth is a big deal if you don't compensate for it.

I actually have different line on each of my reels for the different kind of fishing I do. With the exceptions of braids nothing is over 6 lbs so they all cast well. I haven't been able to find a braid under 10 lbs but they are so thin as to be equal to 2 lb in dia.

Would love to hear yer thoughts on this.

I think fish can see your line in any water, even the Bear. But I don't know that it matters all that much with catfish. You can always run a leader on the end of the braid.

If you don't like Trilene XL, you won't like Stren original. It is pretty much the same line. I'm not sure if they make magnaflex anymore, but that was good line.

Catfishing without braided line is like deer hunting with a bb gun. 30-50 lb power pro is the only way to go

Hahhahaha I love your theory about the deer huntin yes but hppyfshrmn clams to be able to do it with 8 lb test line I get tired of loading big fish I want to buy braided but I'm scared of the biger fish seeing the line I have two penns reels one 975 and I can rember the other one its a little smaller I have I 35 lb line on it I believe for the sticks and rocks that I snag do u do well with braided for channel cats lol
