Cajun Anchor
#1
This type of anchor is very common in the east and south east, particularly around the coastal waters. They are great for staking off (shallow water anchoring) in the skinny water, and there is nothing more convenient.

I run a 19' Carolina Skiff 19 DLX, and use your typical anchor, as well as push/stake off pole and cajun anchor set up. So, what is a cajun anchor? It's really simple.

Go to lowes and purchase a standard issue galvanized grounding rod in the electrical section. Cut it down to your preferred length, which I like 6'. Drill a hole in the end, and attach a stainless rod loop, or just thread through and crimp on a thick piece of multi-strand cable. (you really have to watch the anchor line with stranded wire, as it will eventually wear it out) Attach your anchor rope and your done. Minus the anchor rope, it costs around 15 bucks to make.

When i'm fishing shallow water, either fresh water or salt, this is a super handy piece of equipment. When I get somewhere I want to stay, i simply cleat it off to the boat, and toss it in the water like a harpoon. I've staked off in 12' of water with this thing, which makes it handy if you have your primary anchor out, and want to keep the back from swinging around. It's very safe to use on the stern, because if you get a dramatic roll from a wake or wave, it will simply pull up, rather than drag your boat underwater.

It works well if you stake off with a push pole too. I elected for a push pole rather than a trolling motor, as I can get much shallower that way. I frequently fish areas under 12" of water, or have to navigate water that shallow to get to the good stuff. I made a push pole out of a dow rod and a piece of 1x2. In combination with the cajun anchor, I can completely steady the boat, and have no anchor to pull up.

I hope some of you find this information handy. After using this type of set up in a larger center console skiff and finding it effective, I wanted to share this with the masses. ENJOY!
