Leslie and Mark Glick from Maryland chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea charter fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This was Leslie’s first deep sea fishing charter, and made a request for a large fish, preferably a Sailfish.

Winds were out of the east, northeast at 12 mph, seas running 3-5 ft. with deep blue indigo water pushed into the 2nd reef. We stopped to pick up live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait – fifteen minutes later, we were at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale. We started off trolling with one plainer down and a double hook Bonito strip with a pink sea witch in front. For surface baits we went with three Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips with a Ballyhoo daisy chain teaser.

I trolled in and out of the drop off from 80 ft. out to 200 ft catching two Tunas and two Mahi Mahi’s. From there I headed towards on of our 34 artificial wrecks located in Fort Lauderdale; this one was in 175 ft. of water. I put out one kite with two live Goggle Eyes and as I was letting out the second kite with one live bait on it, the black shadow appeared on the right short. Dorsal and bill came out of the water chasing the live Goggle Eye from the first kite frantically and he ate the bait. Hooked up!!! The Sailfish came immediately out of the water 100 ft. from the boat while the sun glistened down on his unique neon colors. The fight was on!!! Mark was our angler and twenty-five minutes later brought the Sailfish to the side of the boat for picture taking. Leslie looked up and said – “Nice fish but that should have been mine.”

With two baits still in the water, it did not take long for Leslie’s Sailfish to make his appearance – hooked up again!!! This fish greyhounded away from the boat heading south of Fort Lauderdale. Leslie, a natural born angler, did a fantastic job bringing the Sailfish to the side of the boat in less than 15 minutes with Mark cheering her on. We set up again with two kites waiting for another black shadow to make an appearance. The clock was ticking and the fat lady was about to sing. As I was bringing in the kite baits, a Sailfish popped up again on the right short 30 feet from the boat, ate the Goggle Eye and we were hooked up again. Mark jumped into the chair to do battle with the Sailfish. This fish took ¾ of the line of the reel – a hard battle for Mark while Leslie was coaching Mark on how she brought in her Sailfish. The line went slack as the Sailfish pulled the hook and swam away.

With two Sailfish flags flying and Smiles on the two angler’s faces, they went into the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
