Every couple of weeks I head out to Myton to do some duck hunting. I was thinking about driving the extra half hour to try some ice fishing at Pelican. Do you know if it has frozen yet? If so, I know that the action dies down there pretty fast. How long does the catching typically stay good through the ice? I'm looking to pick up a couple of species (for IFG's contest) that would be harder to get down this way.

I was also wondering if you knew if Starvation ever freezes hard enough for safe fishing.

Drove by Starvation on Saturday and the air temp was 47 degrees and the reservoir seemed it wasnt even thinking of ice yet. I have ice fished on starvation, and the last few years when I have drove out there late in the winter (feb) i have seen people ice fishing on it.

I don't know about Pelican, but as far as Starvation goes, it does freeze in the back bays every year. The main lake areas have not frozen to my security level in years. Keep in mind that Bullock now has 20ish inch Tiger Muskie in it. It should be frozen within the next couple of weeks. Pelican has been so low this year that I can't imagine it not being frozen, but I'll have to make a trip out to find out. Starvation is still open water as far as what you can see from Hwy 40. I have not made a trip to Knight Hollow yet. When I do, I'll let you know what it looks like.

Shrimpboy,
Pelican has about 6 inches of ice. However, they are filling it so the edges are soft. Had to use a board to get on the ice last weekend. Fishing was fantastic. Pelican is always best right after ice up. I have found the last few years that you can always catch fish at Pelican, but you just have to work harder at it sometimes. Fishing is hot right now though. Get out there and do some catching, Good Luck.
Good Fishing, Kayote

I've never fished Pelican through the ice. Do you stay near the reeds or go out and find structure in the middle? Is it safe to get to the water from the highway on the east? Any ducks around? I know that they usually keep a place open for themselves in the middle.
