I'd be lying if I told you I headed to Scofield this morning intending to replenish my bait supply of chub meat. I drove into the Madsen Bay boat ramp and headed south along the west shoreline. I went about 1/4 mile and set up in 14 feet of water. I started fishing at 0900 and I stayed until 1430. It was slow in the morning and I had a few hits from small cutts and one 12" tiger. I was seeing many fish coming through on my Showdown and it turned out they were mostly chubs.
I kept one line at 10 feet with a white tube jig and a strip of chub meat. I downsized the second line using a very small jig and a small piece of worm. My fears were confirmed very quickly. It was Chubville with no room for trout. I caught 14 chubs between 7 and 12 inches and they have been frozen for later use at the Gorge or Fish Lake. I didn't get any larger trout of any species, but it wasn't for the lack of trying. Apparently the area I fished just didn't seem to have many of the larger spotted kind.
Ice conditions are still very good. The ice is at least 16 inches thick with a layer of frozen slush about 6 inches thick on the top. Walking and pulling a sled was no problem as the surface is mostly crusted with only a light dusting of new snow. There were some snowmobilers out today and they were running all over the lake. There is enough snow to keep the tracks cool. An ATV would work fine in the current conditions.
I'm hoping for a Fish Lake trip next week because another Chuborama doesn't appeal to me. I have enough chubs to last several seasons.
