dad bought us two new to us cannon digi-troll II electric down riggers off of ebay last year (one 4ft and one 5ft boom) anyways, what fish finder i needed to run these bad boys? plan on only using them at strawberry some and mainly the gorge, just trying to get everything ready to start fishing again this season

My apologies I re-read your post..sounds like they are the older models- the above still holds true, I'd just call cannon and ask if that new system works with the digitroll II's

im new to all things eletric down riggers (well still pretty new to down rigger fishing also) weve always just used manual crank ones and been ok with them, just gets tiring cranking up and down to 60-70-80ft of water (especially when you have a bad back).
Not really sure if we would use the bottom tracking feature, seams like it would be really hard to constantly be reseting the pole every time it went higher/lower.
but i thought i heard that these HAD TO HAVE a fish finder hooked to them for counting how deep to go ect?
either way, we need a new finder as ours is a cheap one and dont tell mph or anything like that. so we DO need to get a good one.

the more and more im searching the web im seeing that these dont need a fish finder to run them, seen a few posts saying the digitrolls would bottom track on there own? but not sure how that would be possible without being hooked to a finder?
anyways looking at the humminbord 798cisi anyone ran one or have any insight?

I'm pretty sure that the digi troll iv riggers are the only ones that work independent of a humminbird finder once they bought cannon they discontinued that model so you had to use one of there units.

we just bought a Humminbird 999hd si/di combo with the 360* view deal also.
anyways looking at how old these riggers really are i doubt we can run them off the finder which is ok, dont think id use it much anyways other them an "emergency up" for when the water drastically changed to more shallow.
are these as easy to wire as it looks? we bought ours used so they must have decided to cut the plug off? or is it really just a positive/negative wire thats all that is needed?

trubbs you can get correct connectors from canon they have the end that goes to the battery and to the rigger, and sell as a set because they don't make the old ones any more . these allow you to detach them for storage. or you can permanently hard wire them to your boat here's a picture of what they look like . you can PM me I have a few I could make you a great deal on.

need to no what downriggers you have
you can find out everything you need to at
http://www.cannondownriggers.com/
they don't make the cannon link any more so I would bet the downriggers you have will not work with your HB 999
now that you have a HB 999
the next thing I would buy would be
i-Pilot Link Minn Kota trolling motor

when I fish for lake trout I use the i-Pilot Link - Follow the Contour
then I can set by my downriggers and keep them on the bottom.
