Misty Waters
#1
First angling adventure for my new pup Misty, and lordy she is a treat! What a great pup- hangs out, doesn't run off, or leave me worrying where she's gone now. Stayed out of my bait and off my hooks. Glued to my side, granted she got to be a muddy mess, but what's a water dog to do!

After a few errands (including her rabies vac) and a stop at the minnow pool for a collection - we headed down to the river, Da Bear.

Serendipitous - Alison Kraus's "Down to the river and pray" just came on Pandora. Today my prayer's were answered, after a few pitches the mist rose up in my mind that the fish just weren't there, too early, too cold, too windy, too muddy.
THEN my prayers were answered - had a BIG take, and my bobber bounced, the dove and ran. Hook set, and a big fight. Thought I had a bass on as it ripped line. Tightened down the drag, and got a good look - tall shiny and silver. My first spring Crappie - firmly hooked through the roof.

Flipped to shore the greeting party awaited. Eager to lap at the oozing slime of the footlong slab, we paused for a picture, then time to turn back to the muddy shoreline. Not too long later another fathead fell prey, and a repeat performance. These weren't no skinny dinks, again had a fight on my hands. Knowing these papermouths like to live up to their name - caution ensued. This old -used to be white- marabou jig should have been retired LONG ago. But - hey, it produced yet again. This one clocked in at a solid 13. (ha - some brag about it going to 11!)

Misty was muddy, and I think her patience was waning, so we called it a day. I'll admit EVERY fish I caught this day was bagged and tagged, all both of them. Now had 48 of their best friends come to play, would have had the game of selective harvest to contend with. As it were, some nice fat filets sit in an ice bath with some Tony Chachere's spice to salt 'em up a bit.

There's gonna be a Fry this Friday! Good way to burn some vacation on a fine afternoon. Beats working, eh?

I want to try going after some Crappie this summer. I understand they are very good eating. But I know absolutely nothing about fishing for them. Time to hit Youtube. I'm open to any and all info people are willng to share.

I'm no expert, but I've lucked on to a few from time to time. One thing about Crappie, where there's one, there's usually a dozen more. They're edumacated fish, they like schools. They also like looking up. Unlike Perch that hug the bottom under ice, Crappie usually suspend, and I've heard they are more likely to hit upward at a bait than chase one down.

That being said - I'd let a spinner drop to the bottom and THEN had it get hit on the lift. They have rather large mouths, unlike their panfish cousins the Bluegill, so can take a large bait without worry. I've found they like to chase. They'll go after an array of offerings. Curly tail grups work well, but change up colors if action drops of. A simple jighead - or a minnow plastic, or minnow real - as I used today.

My Asian friends chuckle at me for pitching spinners at them, but hey - Mmmmmepps - if it works. My typical blade/bead combo has worked well - tipped with a pinch of worm. Sometimes a bobber, with a twitch can call them on.

Here's a sampling of lures I've caught them on.

Where at on the Bear River? I've gone through Corrine before. I was fishing for cats when I went there though. Didn't have any luck when I did go, but could see movement in the water.

I was above the dam, in the Cache Valley area. I've fished just below the dam, but not really farther down, though some of our Catters do some serious damage down Corinne way. Need to give it a try.

I have caught some Crappie down there, wish there was a launch farther up.

The movement could likely have been carp. My pup kept looking up all excited when they'd jump.

True that, best I've run across to date is 13. But above 9-10 they really start putting some shoulders on. One of my river buds measures by hands rather than length. Wasn't there long, but almost surprised no bass where playing. Maybe next time.

Got some other Crappie spots I really need to give a try. No clue where they spawn around our area.

I was tickled with 'em. I know what you mean, I've caught Bluegill on a fly, and they can really give a tug with those tall agile bodies. Wouldn't mind trying Crappie on a fly - any fly suggestions to try? I've had Bluegill pecking at cottonwood puffs on my line, silly fish.

Never have made it for the PV spawn, but wouldn't mind trying, might be worth the trip.

This spots been pretty good to me in late summer. Multi species can be fun - Crappie, LM SM bass, Bluegill, Sunfish, Carp, Cats. I keep waiting for my first Walleye there - I'm pretty sure they are around.

Maybe I was too subtle - but yeah, I went and collected some minnows. Didn't find any carplings, but did nab a few fatheads. Often I'll pitch a plastic grub, curly tail - due tone colors. Tipped with a pinch of worm seems to keep them interested. A football jig with a chigger-craw gets the bass-attention.

Everyone loves spinners. Well, I do anyway.

I don't know where they spawn either, guess I've never went looking for them that time of year. Nice to see some big ones there though. Later J
