Porcupine Ice Check?
#1
Does anyone know if the pig is ice free and boat fishable now? Been wondering about a Friday boat check trip and can't decide between Hyrum and Porcupine. I love those Kokes but don't want to find it still ice bound or unlaunchable. Also how is the water clarity for both puddles? When its too stained I'm not a good enough fisherman to have a big day and I kind of want to have a big day, been skunked a couple times lately on the warm water stuff and so I need a tug or two. Thanks and later. J

[#800000][font "Comic Sans MS"][size 3]SA,

Since the dirt road up to the dam and beyond is NOT plowed, I would be a lot more concerned about being able to even get a boat TO the water. Since there isn't a launch at the Pig and the canyon/beach launch areas are still likely to have some snow cover or be really soft ground at this time of year, I would think Hyrum would be a better choice right now. I never head up there before June myself.

The snow and ice on the roads was nearly gone the last time I was ice fishing up there over a month ago. However, that launch in the north gulch is very steep and loose so it might be off limits yet. I suspect its fishable, but I'd like to hear from someone that has been there recently. Those Kokes were driving me nuts through the ice and I vowed to return with the boat and riggers so I can catch enough for a good fry. They were big enough this winter that its worth going after them this year. Well between them being bigger and Hyrum having smaller fish, I'm more interested in the pig. Hope I can make them bite, they were tough for me through the ice this year, so I may be kidding myself to think it will be easier trolling for them.

Thanks for the heads up on your thoughts about conditions, but its a very different year this year and I think it may be ready to fish. Maybe just wishful thinking too, but it seems like things are at least a month ahead of usual. Just looking at the weather report, that might all change by the weekend, maybe I better take your advice. If it gets all wet again it might be scary getting out of the gulch with a boat and trailer. Thanks J

I agree, wish it was otherwise, but I guess Hyrum may be the destination. Hope the minnows are a little larger than they were through the ice. Somehow 12" trout aren't that much fun anymore, but it beats a Skunken. Thanks for the update. J

I was up there a few weeks/ month ago and it was ice free only to the spring. I would imagine its probably way more open now. The road was in good condition except for a rock slide towards the back end that would be hard to get by with a boat. That may be gone by now though.

Thanks that's a little fresher than when I was there last. Appreciate the update. J
