Firehole

It has been a long time since I posted, almost two years according to my profile. So welcome back to myself.

Anyways, my brother and I snuck up to the gorge on Friday. We were worried about ice since there hasn't been any decent solid reports but decided to risk it anyways. After a late start and a few stops we arrived at the launch close to seven just as a 4 wheeler was coming off the ice.

So the ice is plenty thick (solid 8) and has been I'm sure for a couple weeks regardless of warm weather. (thinking the locals were just trying to keep it off the radar). Fished it from about seven to midnight and only iced one burbot. Got back to the truck, too lazy to set the tent up so we just slept in the cab of the Dogde.

Woke up the next morning and drove down to see how far the ice makes it down and ran into open water maybe a mile down, or less.

Got back on the ice about ten in the morning and fished til about two icing only one rainbow. Back to truck for a catnap and hit the ice at 4 to see if we could hook into more burbot but were unsuccessful, but did have another rainbow at the hole only to snap off.

Leaving, we stopped at cruel jacks for a burger. Talking to the waitress sounds like some of the locals don't know it iced up either. Asked us how the fishing was, said her and her husband were gonna take the boat to Firehole Sunday, we just laughed and she didn't believe us when we said there was 8 inches of solid ice.

Anyways, that's my report, and based on talking with the others, no one did much better

Summary: Solid Ice, slow fishing.

Was there any snow up there?

Not much snow, maybe a couple inches but the drifts got up to maybe a foot, nothing a 4x4 can't handle, in fact I stayed in 2 wheel most the time. The snow did help with pulling the sleds on the ice though, but still slick.

Where were you looking for ice information? I saw a post from Ryno a few days before Christmas and he gave an ice update.

There is a ice-fishing forum with a Wyoming section and we've been discussing / updating ice conditions at Firehole and the Gorge since Thanksgiving. Google "Wyoming Ice Fishing" and I bet you'll find the site... check in there we try to keep everyone updated on the ice... I think people have been fishing firehole for over 3 weeks now probably longer and that is about when the fishing dies off big time in that area from personal experience.

I don't think the locals were trying to keep it off the radar. The locals I know and talk to hate fishing Firehole because it freezes first and gets over-fished very quickly... Everyone is waiting for ice to make it further south. (By the way, there are a number of fishable coves further down the lake). I could see people being tight lipped about ice conditions when it makes it down south where the big lakers are though[Wink]
