My new year's resolution....catch a crappie!
#1
In planning out this year's fishing trips, my #1 goal is to catch a crappie, since I have yet to catch one. I don't know how much time I will have to hit the hard deck these next few months, So I'm planning on fishing hard in the spring and summer months. I live in Delta, but often go up north to visit family in Ogden and Draper. Out of curiosity, when and where is the best time/place to catch crappie. I'm tentatively planning on hitting Pineview and Willard in May, but would love to hear any other input on how to catch these guys

Hit Pineview when the lake fills up and floods the brush along the banks. When those shallows warm, the crappies head in.

They have screwed up all the access points, so it's hard to get to some spots, but just means a longer walk. Look for reports. Fish with small jigs in the weeds and willows, either under a bobber or by casting/dropping jigs and keeping just enough tension in the line to feel the tic when a fish inhales the jig.

Little tube jigs and curlies are great, tip em with perch meat (tiny chunks) crappie nibbles, Gulp minnows, or waxworms work great, too. I have used anything from black to yellow, pearl, chartreuse, whatever, but switch around and on any given day, some color will be better than others.

Utah lake is probably your best bet. I have been catching quite a few recently there. My second choice would be dc in the spring there better size there also. Small gulp minnow or hair jig. Or if you fly fish clousers.

Good to know.....about what time of year would Pineview be doing this? I'm guessing late spring early summer?

Where, in your opinion, is the best place to catch crappie at UT lake?
