Killing of Sturgeon in Hells Canyon/Salmon River
#1
Another forum that I'm on has me a bit concerned so I thought I would link it here. If this is against the rules, please delete or give me some guidance on making it so people here can read the situation and help.

This is a jet boating forum with many of the people posting in this thread, business owners in the area who rely on healthy sturgeon fishing and education of proper handling, etc.

There are public pictures available of a certain Nez Perce tribe member enlisting the help of "white guys" in the killing of Sturgeon. Apparently the tribe has no limits on the size, quantity of keeping sturgeon.

If anyone can help spread the word so we can change this, it would be appreciated.

Disturbing. But I guess not all together surprising.

Probably not aiding and abetting since it is legal for the one party to keep. Probably not even illegal in regards to guiding or outfitting if it was a friend and no fee was charged.

Since we don't all play by the same rules I doubt much can even be done.

Awareness helps.

I don't want to start a tribal rights thing but this is how I feel. If your argument is our ancestors did this before their land was taken, it's our culture. Do it like they did, primitive. Driving a pickup in to deadwood to use gaffs and net or a 100k jet boat isn't cultural, I've seen it both. It really bugs me when it's an endangered species.
My grandparents had a lake house on a reservation in Wisconsin. The tribe introduced and managed lake sturgeon so they could spear them through the ice. It was highly regulated. They also managed walleye and kept the lake productive.

Of course like all people it's a tiny percentage that makes everyone look bad. As anglers we all know or saw a nonnative do the same thing.

They can do whatever they want on the res. but off of it we all need to live by the same rules.
