I went up to Soldier Creek this morning to get more familiar with it before the DAV fishing Saturday, since I haven't been there for a few years. I went around the point and up north and trolled the east shoreline, looking for rainbows. Fishing was not fast but I boated 3 bows in 3 hours, and missed probably twice that many. I didn't really know what I was doing, since I don't fish for bows, but I was using a small silver flasher, and a worm harness with half a nightcrawler, with downriggers at 15 to 20 feet depth. There are probably more productive ways to catch them, maybe even with full pop gear etc. I can't say that I graphed a whole lot of fish either, so a better spot might be more productive too. I just wanted to get some experience fishing for these things before Saturday. Maybe just good old powerbait or worm and marshmallow?
There were a couple of DNR workers there doing creel surveys. They said most anglers were having the same kind of luck that I did.
I've had better luck on the kokes than I had this morning on the bows, so maybe I'll just go koke trolling again, or I'll just leave it up to my vets, and do what they want to do.
I'm looking forward to the big shindig Saturday, and the chance to meet some of you guys. My boat's still hitched up and I'm ready to go! [cool]
PS If anyone knows a surer way of getting them into some fish, I'm sure we'd all be interested!
