How early is too early for the morning bite?
#1
As previously mentioned, I am just getting back into ice-fishing after a 8 year or so break. I plan on heading up to pineview early tomorrow morning and staying there until about noon. I've read several reports of people getting there at 5:30 and having good success, which brings me to my main question of is it possible to be up there too early before the fishies have started looking for food?

Perch won't bite until it's pretty light. Crappie are a fish that can be caught day or night. But you need a good fish finder to locate crappie as they are usually suspended.

Perch will bite SOMETIMES in the dark before sun-up, but not much. They seem to start as the sky lightens up just before the sun rises.

Crappies start really early, and have bitten all night for me at PV. They DO suspend as mentioned, but usually some hang out near the bottom.

If I don't have my sonar, I try old holes and drill new ones wholesale and try for a bite just a foot off the bottom or so. If they are there you'll get a nibble right after the drop, right when you get it where you think you need it. Then I mess with depth until I really find em.

I started at 6 but others came early. Bites right away. Very light, you need a spring on the end of the pole.. without it you won't see the pickup. Stopped biting at 8 30 .. thought they were gone but did catch more dead right on the bottom, I mean right in the mud. Tipped with wax worms. .

By "some" do you mean perch? I haven't got any perch this year yet, and I'm glad they are back.
