Fishlake with the Kids
#1
We had a blast at the Fishlake tournament, despite some really horrible catching (I caught 3 perch, my daughter reeled in 2 perch and a rainbow). My daughter thought it was the funnest thing ever, and we got this great video of her. Unfortunately, the video doesn't show the little 12" rainbow that kept stealing her bait before she could set the hook! If you have facebook, and wouldn't mind giving our video a like so we can win the contest, I'd appreciate it!

On a gear note, I bought an Eskimo 6 ice tent, used all the anchors, and still had 5/6 of the grommets rip off at the stitching. I was pretty disappointed as it was the first time we used it. I sent it back for a refund, but would love any recommendations on a 6-8 person ice shelter.

Thanks again to all who helped sponsor the tournament, and my stepsister won a great backpack/tacklebox in the raffle.

I have a cabelas brand shelter that's been through 6 seasons now. Never had any problems, but I have been eyeing those nice new clams and that might be my next tent. One thing I did was buy self tapping big lag boots with large washers and take my drill to put in the ice. I think it works better than this hand ones and make it more secure imo

Thanks guys. Anybody have experience with the Clam 1600 5-7 person hexagon?

Did you have all the ropes anchored down?

Going almost 50 days, some with 30 mph winds, on my Eskimo 6 and haven't had an issue. But I also pack a 10v drill and throw every anchor in possible since it takes almost no effort.

Have the clam XL 6000 and didn't budge Saturday during the winds. Tons of room, love it.

Yeah, I had all the anchors in for the tent plus I anchored the rope ties for each hub point. I was less than impressed to say the least.

I'll have to check out the Clam tents at cabelas and get a feel for which one we like best

I have an xl2000 and love it. But I have only had it out twice as I got it for Christmas.

I had a hub shelter, hated it because it was such a hassle to move if you needed to relocate to find fish. In fact, it was such a pain that I would find myself not moving and accepting the fact I was fishing areas that were fruitless, but still I would resist moving.
Bought an Otter Cabin and never looked back. If I need to move, I remove one simple aluminum support bracket and hit the ice to a productive area.
The sled style shelter definitely equaled more fish for me!

I bought a Cabela's XL2000 insulated tent on Black Friday and I've loved it up until the tournament on Fish Lake, but I still think I like it. When the wind gusted around 11:00 it pulled up the windward side of my tent and almost dumped half my catch back into the hole. The buckle for the strap is a little cheap, something I found out when I went out and cinched it back down while the wind was blowing. When I did that I bent the little crossbar and had the thing basically ruined. If there hadn't been a small pair of pliers in my pocket my tent would have gone over and half my stuff would have been blowing across the lake.

I've learned a few things: set up your tent so the corner is into the wind (or where the weather report says the strong wind is going to come from later in the day), always put the interior corner anchors in on the windward side, and be ready to rotate the tent 45 degrees to face the corner into the wind. I'm going to keep a close eye on it in the future and make sure at least two of the exterior anchors are bearing the load from the wind.

Regarding the Cabela's tent, I would prefer stronger exterior anchor straps and hardware but the rings are stitched very well to the tent itself. There are also mistakes in the stitching on a couple of the pockets where it looks like they stitched it at the wrong angle, pulled it out and stitched it back on.

In order to save a few $$$s I purchased an Ameristep Doghouse blind for my ice fishing. Set up and take down in seconds and can securely sit on the ice with no issues - even survived a very windy day on Huntington!!!! Great buy for about $60

I have the big Clam 1660 I think it is the bigger of the two and have had it for going on three years it is a little big to lug around but it has held up really well. I fish fishlake and when the wind gets going it can get pretty nasty. Even being as big as the clam is it is very easy to set up by yourself if you need and has plenty of room. I upgraded to the big heater buddy to heat it this year and that has help for the kids I would recommend it if you are looking for a big tent that will hold up.

I've been looking seriously at the clam 1660, how many people (kids) do you fish out of it comfortably?

I have four boys and that is about right with out crowding each other. Like I said I really like mine I know they have an insulated one out but I don't know if it is worth the extra weight.
