Looking for a crappie mentor
#1
Hey all,

I'm just really starting to get the hardwater addiction and crappie are on my bucket list. I'm happy to help out on gas, have my own poles, gear, manual auger, and a makeshift shelter and little buddy heater. I'm in Orem and have a pretty flexible schedule if somebody is headed out and wouldn't mind if I tagged along and could show me the ropes.

Thanks,

Jonathon

I'm heading to St George for a week, but if you're still interested and the ice is holding you're more than welcome to join up when I get back. I will be more than ready to hit the ice. I come from Wyoming, so we would have to meet at the lake.

I haven't been up to Pineview for a couple of weeks and not sure when I'm going back up but for right now, Pineview has been the ticket for crappie. We caught them on the North side of Cemetery Point in about 40' of water using glow in the dark ice flies and a 1/16 black tube with green chartreuse tentacles tipped with meal worms and wax worms.
A fish finder is very useful for depth and to see how the fish react to the lure. I would put the lure just above them and jig some, that is when they would hit it.You will need a very light action rod or a spring bobber in order to see the bite most of the time, you will also need to hold your rod in your hand because generally they will only hit once, when you miss, start jigging again and then wait for it.

I would invite you to go with me but I'm not sure when I will be going again, wife says I need to spend some time with her.

Good luck if you go.

Looks like you got about the same info from other posters. Pineview. If you can get there early enough to catch a perch, a little sliver of white belly or perch eye makes for great crappie bait. I will try to find you when I get back.

I think if you have electronics and a spring bobber you'll do fine if you can't find someone to go up there with. I really like Northland Tackles Bro's blodworm for crappies... it puts off enough wiggle to trick them and you don't have to wonder if the last bite you had stole your waxi.

Thanks, I'll check those out! I don't have electronics yet, haven't convinced the wife!
