There was a pretty good post and thread on this very subject not too long ago. http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi?post=91936

I have a Garman Etrex and find it to be an excelent workhorse for me. You can buy them for about $100. It's hand held and can go anywhere. I would love however to get it's big brother the Legend. It is the same size but with some very useable bells and wistles and a higher pixel display. However, if you plan on putting it in your boat, I suggest you think "big display" (= big $$$). Consider just getting a Lorance all-in-one fish finder and GPS.

[#000080]Did help you? This just adds to the confusion. What hell is a waypoint? Channels? Subcodes? I just want to know where I was.[/#000080]

I have a Magellan 315, and like it very much except that the batteries don't last long in it. 2 AA's might last the whole day, if I'm lucky. I'm not sure how the other brands/models compare.

My batteries don't last long in mine either . I wish they could have a solar power cell on them . Then I would only need to use batteries at night . I have a Magellan Sport Trac Pro .

I've been wanting to get the dc adaptor, but haven't wanted to fork out the cash. Topozone.com has some lakes' underwater topography online. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but it would be cool to know exactly where you wanted to fish before you got there. Echo is online. I'm not sure which other lakes are. When I tried to look up Jordanelle last summer, it didn't even show a lake yet. I think they've updated it since then.

Lowrance iFinder. If you have a Lowrance combo unit (fishfinder/GPS) you can use the mmc cards in both the hand held iFinder and the combo style unit. You can swap cards with other people, and they can navigate to your hot spots without even entering any waypoints.

Teroy-I have a Etrex,I like it because they make a holder so I can use it on my boat, also a cord to plug in so you can run it off your boat batt.It takes some of the fear out off low light fishing.Like-"where is the Island?""where is the marina?","Where in the hell am I?"[Smile]They are 100-120$.Also good to mark good fishing spots.

I have the Garmin Etrex just like Old Coots. It is a way cool tool to have for fishing. It was life support at Bear Lake in the fog!!! I have seen them at sportsmans for about a $100. I got mine with Marboro miles [Tongue]

I also love my E-trex. However it has now been replaced with the geko line. You can still find an E-trex at Sportsmans' but the Geko looks to have more features for a great price. After you have used one of these entry level units for a year or so you may want to upgrade to a higher end one,so keep that in mind when you make your choice. DKSRenegade

Teroy-
I was the one who started the discussion last month when I was shopping for a GPS after Christmas. I ended up getting the Garmin e-trex legend. I got it for $199 at sportsmans. I chose it over the regular e-trex because it has maping on it so that you can see where you are going in relationship to land and water landmarks. It has 8 megs of memory so you can download specific maps as well. But for the easy stuff like marking the top secret fishing holes, marina's, underwater structures, etc as well as tracking trolling runs or specific pathways you want to take it works great. Pretty easy to use and I have found it to be accurate to within 5-10 feet of putting me back into my same ice hole. PM me if you have any questions. I did a lot of research on them. I also liked the magellan meridian series a lot but they were a little more expensive. The lowrence ifinder was also nice but they didn't have it at sportsmans and I had a gift certificate to us. Good luck

thats a hard part about buying a gps - when you go to a store, the only thing you will have there is shells - no guts in the units . . because garmin or magellan doesnt provide a unit to demonstrate, the dealer has to buy it and the unlock codes . . so to show off 30-40 different units in a showroom would cost a ton of money, oh and you wanto to see how it works with maps - - add another $90 to each unit . . so NO he did not try it out cause nobody has a working unit to demonstrate around here . .

a store that only sells 1-5 kinds perhaps would buy them to show off . . .i dont know . .

Oh, my mistake!!! I misread it as saying he already bought it[blush]

After reading your reply, looking at some online reviews and after reading a PM from Old Coot, I am going to take a good lokk at the Legend
