A friend and I went to Porcupine yesterday for some ice fishing, thought I would pass along the fishing report and ice conditions.
Road conditions to the lake- The road is plowed and passable by car up to the dam. However, to get to the top of the dam, you're going to want a vehicle with good tires, decent clearance, and I would also encourage a shovel and tow strap (or just a snowmobile). A fellow angler got stuck at the top of the dam which required about 30 minutes of shoveling and a tow strap. Another angler just parked at the bottom of the dam and walked up.
Ice- there was about 1-2 inches of ice on top, then about 3 inches of slush/water, with about 3-4 inches of ice below that. Edges are a little soft within about 3 feet of the shoreline. We took about a 6 foot plank which did the trick. You should be ok with a little bit of common sense and caution. Although one angler up at the east end had a snowmobile on the lake, I don't know that I would have taken one out there.
Fishing- The fishing was SLOW!!!! Between my buddy and I, we didn't have a single nibble from 8:00-2:00! I had my flasher with me and marked schools of fish about 40 feet down, big schools (I'm guessing they were probably kokanee). They would stay for about 30 seconds to a minute and then gone!) I marked three schools of fish like that throughout the day, but that's all that showed up. We were targeting the kokanee, but to no avail. Two other anglers went completely skunked, just like us. While another managed to land two trout in about 5 hours of fishing. I attached a few pics. Hope that helps.
