Lake Pend Oreille

Been wanting to hit this lake and try to catch a big Gerard bow so Dave and I booked with a guide to learn the ropes for 2 days. We rented an AirB&b in Bayview, brought the wives along and made a mini vacation. Temps were cold with lows in either single digits or low teens with highs just below freezing. Guide was great and shared a ton of info on the how, what and where. We ended up with 1 nice bow about 12lbs, had 1 break off after the hit on the DR and caught another 8-9 bows up to about 5lbs. We also got a bull and a western slope cutt, coloring of both was beautiful, I had never seen a bull before. The guide ran 14 rods with the planner boards and DR’s with apex’s, Lyman’s and flies. 1st day all the fish except 1 came on the DR, 2nd day it was just the
Opposite. All fish were released

Great report and pics Alan, were the cabins on the water, where you stayed? Is that trout with the red spots the bull trout? With those temps and that wind, it must have been really cold up there.

The pic are of houseboats that people have built and moored in the bay, a lot have a garage with powered roll up doors for the boats below and living quarters upstairs. The AirB&B we were in was about 3 blocks from the launch. Yes the bull is the one with the red spots. Yes it was a bit chilly, thankfully the boat cabin was fully enclosed and had a heater

Looks like a fun trip Alan, so did the wives find stuff to have fun while you were fishing? Looks like it could be a fun spot for a summer trip too... I need to find spots so my non fishing wife can still have fun while I go fish... don't think I'll make the drive up there, but might be fun to do your fly-in option... I've been wondering about a Cascade summer trip some time when I'm closer to retiring... think it would be fun to be in that type area to play... Thanks for the report... J

No they basically hung out at the house and read their books even though they had the car to go run around. It’s definitely a summertime place for non fishing activities as a lot of the stores are seasonal and other outdoor activities were limited with the temps.  Sandpoint had some shops and stuff but the girls weren’t interested in being out in the cold with the wind chill.

Thanks for that info, guess winter isn't the time... Need a place like Cascade where there is a ski resort across the lake... Not much else to do at Cascade either so mostly a fishing destination... Oh well that keeps the crowds down... Later Jeff

There is a ski resort northwest of Sandpoint but not much snow in the area, we missed the hot bite by about a month, but last year right about now was the best time, water temp plays a big role in activity and location of the fish

Alan I just read your report and loved it.  My wife and I actually went up there in November to try it out.  We tried to hire a charter but they were all booked.  I read a ton and did my best.  We ended up catching 3 "Shakers" (as they call them).  I was running flies and a few Lymans.  My question is color.  Apparently those Kams are pretty finicky when it comes to color on their flies, apex's and lymans.  Would you mind sharing some specifics of your trip on colors, depths and speed?
