need some advice on float tube or small boat

Hey I am considering purchasing a float tube or small boat like a canoe or something of the sort, since it apears that at some point I am just not going to be able to catch enough fish from shore to satisfy my appetite for fishing. I am however on a limited budget and am wondering where the best place would be to get one and what all of your personal opinions on the best choice of fishing watercraft would be.

Howdy Jed. I just took a float tube out, my maiden voyage. I bought the Outfiters Eagle from Garts for 69 bucks normally like 120. I loved it, it was very stable and easy to navigate. If you have kids that you take fishing often I would recomend a canoe or something else but if they are old enough they would have fun in a tube also. I would post this question in the Float Tube section on the main board they will give you a bunch of feed back and some suggestions.

[cool]Hey, JB, OEJ gave you some good advice. If you want the most bang for the buck, Gart has got some smokin' deals on their Outfitter line of craft these days. Several of the folks who drop in on the float tubing forum have got them and are happy with them.

Check the attachment at the bottom. It is a piece I put together a while back to help decide what kind of craft will fit best...for your budget and the type of fishing you plan to do.

My first boat was a four man rubber raft that I purchased while I was attending BYU. My wife and I had several enjoyable fishing outings on it, and I still have it. One thing I have learned over the years is that the fish don't care how fancy of rig you are fishing from, or how much money you put into it (for my sake, thank goodness).

yuk leeches if i did'nt have waders and wanted to float a pond full of leeches i would wear socks and pants and tie string around the bottom of my pants so they wound'nt get up my pant leg

I would buy some 3X thickness neoprene waders! They only cost about $40. If it's a warm water lake, you may get a little hot in them, but I'd rather be hot than try to dislodge a couple of leeches that are attached to my legs!

He he he. I've been waiting for this one LMAO. A kayak my friend, a kayak. This is a far superior craft to a canoe or tube in my opinion (sorry TD). It is low cost, fun and you can cover miles in it. Not a little whitewater yak, but a regular sea kayak. You can add rod holders and fish finders and store camping gear and rods below deck, carry it on a truck rack or bed, and on and on and on. Ask Tincan what he thinks of them. You can get them for a few hundred used. Just my opinion. If this sounds interesting, contact me and I have a plethora of details for you.

I have thought of that and am definitely open for suggestions on the kayacks How good are they as far as tipping over. In that first one it lookes like that one has stabalizers on it. Do they come with the big kayacks or is that an expensive add on. How much do you think I could get a two man job for?

Where are you from anyway. I know you usually have a lot to say about the basin fishing places. I am from upalco which is neer roosevelt.

No stabilizers, you don't need them. The two in the pics are 31" wide and you have to really try to tip them over. They are extremely stable. I went out with Kayote II the other day to practice self rescue, and you had to sit sideways grab a rail and lean way out over the edge to get them to flip. Even then, you could climb back in very easily. You can get narrower tippier yaks like the Scupper Pro TW from Ocean Kayak at 26" wide. They are much faster, but still very stable with a little practice. I wouldn't get a tandem (two man). You end up taking it out yourself most of the time and they're much harder to paddle. Just get two one man yaks if you want to go. I am in Vernal. I can take you out sometime to test drive one at Steinaker if you want. I have been very busy lately though, so the invitation would have to wait till September, but you are more than welcome to try mine and see if you like them. FYI, this invitation is open to any and all on this board. Just let me know if you want to see what it's like. I havn't had anyone try them that didn't like them. Kayote II is very generous letting others use his yak.

You can get a good used one off of Ebay. There is a place in Heber called Everything in the Barn that has some great prices on used Explorers. I wouldn't buy new if I were you. You can get a great used yak for $300 if you look around. They are indestructable.
