We went to Bear Lake this weekend looking for some whitefish. We hit several areas from the state park marina down to Gus Rich point but couldn't find any to play. I ended up catching two tiny whitefish on the rockpile on a flatfall jig, which was a little odd. But, they know what they like so who am I to judge?
The star of the trip turned out to be the cutthroats. We caught about 10 for the day and every single one of them would be a slot buster at Strawberry. Just some ridiculously nice cutthroats. Most were caught on a flatfall jig or on a tube jig. White and silver was the ticket.
The cutthroats weren't fast, but really high quality. Weather was good but cold. Several other boats out. I saw one catch a cutthroat. No one on shore was getting whitefish at the marina.
Also, I caught a tagged cutthroat. I went to submit the tag on the DWR app and it said my tag number was no good. It has an address on it to send the tag back to but no date or other information. The tag was yellow. I have no idea what to do with it other than send it back, but I have no idea what information they want with it. Just getting the tag back only tells them that the fish was dinner. Maybe that's all they need. I don't know. Thoughts on that?
Anyway, it was a really fun weekend. We finished our second cutthroat slam for the year. Thanks to TubeDude and BearLakeFishGuy for the invaluable information and the encouragement to try this out.
