Scoutmaster needs advice on the Boulders
#1
I need some insight and knowledge about the Boulders Region of the Aquarius Plateau. I'm a fairly experienced fisherman/outdoorsman, but I've never been down to the Boulders. I've spent most of my summers in the Uintas.

I'm currently a scoutmaster with a group of extremely inexperienced 12 year olds. Our plan for camp WAS we were going to drive up to Washington Lake in the Uintas and Canoe across to the back side of the lake, away from the organized campgrounds. This way the boys could kind of "rough it" without being far from the vehicles...

However, with the current snowpack in the Uintas, we will not be able to get there when we had scheduled (June 22-25). So, I turn to you, a complete stranger, for assistance. [Smile] Can you point me in the direction of an area/lake where my boys could have a positive experience camping, where we have decent fishing available, maybe even where we can use our canoes? We'd also toyed with the idea of doing a one night backpack in to a lake a little deeper in the Uintas, just so the boys could experience their first backpacking trip.

Any advice or expertise would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Bart

Welcome - you might want to check this POST - they've just been discussing Boulders lakes, and tubes and toons. Not sure what lakes you can get a canoe to there. Probably not going to backpack in with those I'd guess? Unless they're inflatable (I've done that b4).

(just ignore all the hoopla at the end!)

sorry I don't have anything specific to offer. But you should be able to get some helpful assistance from some forum members.

snowpack may still be an issue on the Boulder as well, but you still have options.

I'd look at Lower Bowns. It would be a great place for "inexperienced" scouts. You can drive to the lake, canoe, fish, hike, etc. It is also one of the lowest elevation lakes on the mountain, and shouldn't be an issue with snow, etc. (just be prepared!).

+1 They have some rainbows that will surprise you in there and a small boat ramp. It should be perfect for you.

I grew up going to Lower Bounds every year for memorial day weekend. I owe my love of fishing to that lake.

Lower Bowns is great. For a bit more solitude, you can also look at some lakes on the south west side that you can drive to, The last few miles of the road is rough but you can get a high clearance vehicle there with your canoe. Get your maps out - PM me if you need more help. These lakes have mostly rainbows - easier for scouts to catch and beautiful country.
