Farewell Gean Snow

Many of you old(er) timers remember Angler's Inn. Some of you may have had the opportunity to talk to (or, mostly listen[]) to my grandfather, Gean Snow.
He passed away last Tuesday, after suffering with dimentia and a failing body. We burried him on Saturday.
I sure learned a lot I didn't know about him at his funeral, and I thought I knew a lot!

The younger folks on here may never know how much Gean Snow influenced hunting and fishing in this state, and how hard he worked to get kids into enjoying our outdoors. If there was a conservation group to belong to, he did.
He was a big kid at heart that has caught fish that weigh more than your car, yet still giggled when catching white bass.
My favorite parts of his obituary are "He was a conservationist before being a conservationist was cool," and "In lieu of flowers, dad would like it if you took a kid fishing."

So, how about sometime, everyone here takes a kid out? Niece, nephew, neighbor kid, your own. Doesnt matter.

I still have and use a Snow Fly Rod that I purchased over 20 years ago. It is a great rod to this day.
Sorry to hear that he has passed away.
I agree that Gean did a lot for the people of Utah and our great outdoors.

[cool][#0000ff]I am one of the old(er) timers who knew Gean well...and who will miss him on a personal level. Enjoyed a lot of BS sessions with him at the Anglers Inn Store in Sugarhouse. I still remember him being always willing to show how to tie a fly pattern or to go outside and help a newbie fly flinger learn how to throw a line.[/#0000ff]

I to am older and went in to anglers in all the time growing up with and without my dad it was a day when they shut the doors.
You had a great grandpa and hope you carry on where he left off.
Not many people left that promote Utah the way some people did back then.
He will be missed and thank you for letting everyone know.

My grandpa loved fishing too, and as he was approaching the end of his life he would joke, "Where I'm going it'll be a little too warm for trout". We would encourage him, and tell him there should be plenty of bass there at least. Let's hope he and Gean are fishing in some cool waters right now, I'm sure they are. [fishon]

Well I didn't think I was an "old timer" on here but maybe I am? Anyway, I'm 38 and remember Gean well! I grew up in Sugarhouse also and started taking fly tying lessons from Mickey @ Anglers Inn when I was 11. Saw Gean all the time and he was always really nice and a class act, I also still fish a 9' Snow fly rod to this day!!

Really nice obit, and it's so true how few of us can say our career and passion are the same thing! He was a very lucky man..

I have a friend in Eagle Mountain who I've been saying I'd take her and her kids fishing for their first time out on Utah Lake, and make white bass fish taco's afterward.

For Gean's memory I'll move it to the top of my priority list and get those kids (and their hot mom[]) out there..

I remember Gene well and the warm reception received in his store in Sugarhouse. I lived in Oregon for 34 years but always stopped in Angler's Inn when ever I came to town just for the greetings and help. Too bad Gene is gone he did a great work for a lot of people.

I sure liked Gean....In the mid '70's my wife and I used to visit his shop and then head to Zoom's for spagetti & beer.

I watched his team gather up about 10,000 bucks worth of fishing gear for an old boss of mine for a trip to Alaska. My purchases were always worms, hooks, line and sinkers. And I was always treated with respect every time I visited that store. I also bought my first Browning knife from Gean, I still use it to-day.

Sorry about your loss. Sounds like his death was a good thing if he was beginning to lose his strength. It has been said you never really get to know someone until you attend their funeral. Maybe there is a message there for all of us to spend more time really getting to know and appreciate the special friends and family we have. And what better way to honor someones life and memory than by following his admonition to "take a kid fishing."

I am also sorry for your loss. I miss my grandfather(s).

About 8 years ago, I was fishing at Currant Creek reservoir. We pulled off during a storm and started packing up to go home. Lying there on the ground in the parking lot was what looked like an old beat up flyrod. In the rain and wind, I hastily picked up up and threw it in the truck. I got home and after drying it off, found it was rather undamaged. Even had a reel on it and was clearly well used. I tried numerous attempts at finding the owner (posted in lost and found in the paper, and I think even on this site) and no takers...so I took up fly fishing. I still have that rod and use it to this day. It's a Snow rod. I don't fly fish much, but when I do, that is the rod I use...and to this day it's the only fly rod I've ever had! I have replaced the reel, but I still have that old reel also.

After I couldn't find the owner, I did some research on it to figure out that these were made by Gean Snow from Anglers Inn. I never met him, but others that I've showed the rod to really talked highly of him.

Josh, your grandfather was one of a kind. The crew that he put together at Angler's Inn was unique. Unfortunately, we have lost two now, your Grandfather and Greg Jonas. Knew him for a lot of years, unfortunately I never got to fish with him. His legacy will live on with guys like Micky, Byron, the Milburns, and a bunch of others. Best wishes to all of you and we will always keep him in our hearts !!!

At least three are now gone. The gentleman who repaired fishing reels (can't think of his name) is also gone.

By chance I toke my neighbor and his son yesterday... He pulled in a small Bearlake Cutthroat yesterday...
I'm sure as long as we can keep catching him fish and keep his Ipod charged he's hooked on fishing... []
