Utah Lake in May
#1
My camping group has it's first campout during the second week of May. We have gotten too big for Hyrum, our normal destination.

I suggested Utah Lake, since it has 31 sites with full hookups. (water,  power, sewer).
I have never fished Utah Lake, so was looking forward to it.

Someone stated that there are loads of mosquitos in May, and the destination has not been approved yet.

Can someone give me some accurate info on the bug situation there during the second week of may?

Thanks.

Yes, there will likely be a lot of bugs in May.  But most of them will be the swarms of midges in their mating rituals early each calm morning.  Midges do not have mouth parts, so they don't bite.  But they can be a nasty nuisance when they cover your gear and your face...and get in your eyes, ears and mouth.  Mosquitoes are worse at night...and usually not too bad until hot summer. Just wear appropriate clothing and wear DEET.  And fish during the day...not at night.

Fishing in May is as good as it will get all year...for most species.  You didn't mention any specific targeted species, but in May the white bass are at their annual crescendo...massing up to spawn and actively hitting almost anything.  Walleyes are in their post spawn feeding cycle and chances are good for some bigguns.  Catfish are just moving into the shallows and around the rocks for their annual "dating frolic".  Water temps are in the ideal 60s or 70s to produce fishy activity and provide good battles.  May on Utah Lake?  Go for it.  Here are a few writeups to help influence your thinking.

Thanks. I will take this before the group and do my best to convince them.

I'm sure you realize that there are other worthwhile options too.  But some of the higher elevation waters...like Deer Creek, Jordanelle, Rockport, Starvation and others are not quite yet at their best potential for multispecies fishing in May.  Trouting will be good but perch, walleye and bass like it a bit warmer...like from July onward.

Let me know if you need additional input on any other species...or any other waters.  Hope you have a successful outing and that Mama Nature behaves for you.
