Chub in Vivian Park?
#1
I've been lurking here forever, finally joined up.

Took my little girls ages 2 and 4 to Vivian Park last night to fish. Got no action on the little trout in there, but around 9pm we started catching a bunch of small (5 in or so) chub on worms. I've never heard anything about chub being in there though. Tried to call DWR but they're closed because it's Friday.

I have two questions. Has anybody else ever seen/heard of Chub in that little pond? Secondly is it legal to harvest them? The proclamation says that carp are the only non game fish allowed to be harvested from the Provo, so I'm not sure if that little pond is considered separately from it. If they are legal to catch, it'll be great because I can have my kids catch catfish bait for me.

Also, just before it got dark, I noticed a couple of large (est 24 inch or so) fish cruising around right there by the outlet as well. Anybody know what these are? I couldn't get a good look at them since the light was pretty poor.

I don't have any pictures since we let them go as I'm not sure whether the pond is considered part of the Provo in regards to harvesting non game fish. However the front tips of the dorsal and pectoral fins lined up perfectly so I'm pretty certain what fish they are. I'd hate to see Vivian Park get overrun by chub as it's the best place for me to take my little girls to get them interested in fishing while they're little.

it swam down strawberry river from the resevoir, flopped its way down Daniels canyon into deer creek, and then down the spillway and jumped the bridge from prove river into the park Smile

[cool][#0000ff]There have been chubs in the entire Provo River system forever...since Lake Bonneville. The predators mostly cleaned them out of Utah Lake and Deer Creek but there are still tons of them in Jordanelle. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Wherever two adult chubs can get together and some of their spawn survives then you can have a chub explosion. As long as the chubs spawn faster than the predators eat them they are good to go. Since chubs are not a protected species I guess that they are legal to remove from that pond...and DWR would probably prefer that you do so. Check to see if it is legal to use a minnow trap and harvest a bunch for bait.[/#0000ff]

Yeah, I'm not too surprised that they're in there. I know that they're legal to use for bait as well, just concerned with the thing on page 13 of the Proclamation, where it says that carp are the only nongame fish that may be taken in the waters specified there. Provo below Deer Creek dam is listed on that page. I will happily take all the chub I can get out of there to maintain the fishery and use em to catch big fish, but I want to make certain that it's legal to do so. I'm pretty sure it'll be okay to take them but I value my fishing privileges, and if nothing else I'll check with DWR on Monday.

It ain't the river. It ain't artificial flies and lures only either. It ain't the same possession limits either. Don't know why you'd think the same rules apply as the river. Even in the river you can take non game fish by means of angling, and above Olmstead there are no restrictions except the state wide restriction on endangered species.

Provo River, Summit, Utah and Wasatch counties (a) From Center Street Bridge (entrance to Utah Lake State Park) upstream to I-15 (Utah County):
CLOSED to taking of nongame fish by methods other than angling.
• CLOSED March 1 through 6 a.m. on the first Saturday of May.
(b) From Olmstead Diversion Dam upstream to Deer Creek Dam (Utah and Wasatch counties):
• Limit 2 trout under 15 inches.
• ARTIFICIAL FLIES AND LURES ONLY.

© From Legacy Bridge on Midway Lane (SR-113) in Midway upstream to Jordanelle Dam (Wasatch County):
• Limit 2 trout under 15 inches.
• ARTIFICIAL FLIES AND LURES ONLY.
(d) From Jordanelle Reservoir upstream to the confluence of the South Fork Provo River (Wasatch County):
• Limit 2 brown trout under 15 inches. • CLOSED to the possession of cutthroat and
rainbow trout and their hybrids. All cut- throat and rainbow trout and their hybrids must be immediately released.
• ARTIFICIAL FLIES AND LURES ONLY.

Thank you. The reason I was thinking it may be subject to the same rules as the river is that I was thinking that it was fed by and then fed back into the Provo. Unsurprisingly, I'm wrong. Obviously the same rules don't apply as bait is permitted there. I guess too much homework makes me a dull boy. Just didn't think it through. Damn not finishing college ten years ago!

So anyways, take your kids to Vivian Park around sundown and make them catch bait for you. Kill two birds with one stone. We'll be back out there tomorrow night again, catching me some kitty bait. If you see a guy wrangling two little girls and trying to keep them fishing, it's probably me.

The chubs have been in Vivian for the five years I've helped with the youth fishing clubs. A six pound carp came out of there last year too. Both are legal to keep.
