It seems my wife and the familly made reservations for some campground out in Lava hot springs Idaho while I was at Pineview catching smallies.[unsure] Were going tomorrow and I need to find a nearby fishing hole! Has anyone been up there or familiar with the area. Can I find somewhere to fish?
Thanks,
Al

Hi Al,
There is good fishing in that area pending water levels but I am not sure exactly where. Pack your gear and check with the locals or maybe some on the board can give better information. Besure to check the proclamation for any restrictions.
Besure to take a dive off that highest platform if you go into the pool area.

Fish the Portneuf River. It runs thru town but you can follow it up Old US 30 Road, going out of town to the east. There are plenty of Sportman's accesses to get on the river. Take your tube or pontoon boat and drift the river. It is good river fishing and a very pretty area. Jigs, flys, spinners, and good old worms should do the trick.
The Portneuf runs out of Chesterfield Reservior but from what I heard, Chesterfield is non existent anymore. I don't know the current condition it's in but supposedly it was drained not too long ago. Maybe someone will have better info than me.
(edit) If I remember right, the river is closed to fishing within the city limits. I guess it's so you won't snag all the folks riding tubes down the river thru town. As MGB suggested, check out the proclamation for the correct info. There are several places in town that sell tackle and bait and should be able to give you the most up to date info.

Thanks BLM! From the bait description It sounds like I would be targeting Bass. What species will I encounter there? As far as fishing licenses go do I need one from Idaho?
Thanks again,
Al

You will definitely need an Idaho non-resident fishing license. Here is the information courtesy of the BFT link:
