Greenhorn need advice in Upper Snake Region

Hello, I am a greenhorn and looking to get on it. I am fishing a spinner. I am in Idaho falls and looking to head out tomorrow for a couple days fishing. I do not have a boat so it will be from shore. I am looking for some advice as to where to go hit it up and have a good time fishing for trout and drinking some beers.

Welcome to the forum . You could go to Birch Creek and catch some . Not real big but good eating .

Is Birch Creek off the 28 when heading up to Salmon? Where the Birch Creek campground is?

I waas also considering getting on the Henry's near Ashton, just not sure about where and access.

Yes that is the creek I am talking about . I would give the north fork another month . It is very high with the run off .

so on birch creek whenever i have gone there just drifting a worm with one or two split shots has slayed it there. but you have to be on top of your worm though or the little buggers swallow it to there belly's. and in my opinion the henry's fork isn't high... because im used to fishing the snake river in american falls and on saturday it was almost 27,000 cfs and I was still catching fish like crazy. i went right below the dam in Ashton on Wednesday and caught two trout about 17 inches a piece in just a couple of minutes. they are there just you have to find that right spot and i was fishing in just one ripple. good luck

I see where the bridges are, like Vernon, but I don't have a boat. Is that the only access to fish by on the shore? Is it all private land everywhere else?

Just north of Saint Anthony there is a place called the Fun Farm . There is a sign on Highway 20 . There is a diversion dam just below the bridge . When the water is low enough you can wade across to the Island and fish all the channels. You will need waders with felt soles , the river bottom is very slick . I have done very well there with Panther Martin's and red and white Mepps. The limit is 2 fish . You could probably Google map it and get a layout of the river .

i was right below the dam if i climbed the rocks i could have touched the dam. on the east side of the dam there is a road and its a dead end but there is a sportsman's access there (not a sign though) like a civil engineers access i think is what it is called and a gate i just walked down the hill and there was a small island almost that you cross over to from a bridge and the island had a picnic table and such and i just fished the south end of the island. you can also go to the boat dock just below the main road and i have had luck there just bouncing a worm on the bottom there with three split shots or so.. in the current the 16 incher's feel like 5 pounder's haha its a lot of fun. the only down side is that there are like fifty fishing guides that will sit and judge you and sometimes will sit there and watch you for an hour. one even told me i was illegally fishing, but i shoved the regulations down his throat and proved him wrong though and it made my day. and also the guides don't show up tell around 11 or so but when they do they come in numbers.

May I suggest fishing ririe resovoir. Either the ririe side (juniper) or the idaho falls side (blacktail). Bass fishing is heating up from the bank as well as trout. Perch are very abundant on the blacktail side as well. Bass I like to use a little brown curlytail. Trout will take that or spinners. Perch will eat anything. Watch for rattlers. They are incredibly abundant this year. The hosts at blacktail have removed over 15 this year. And I've taken 4 outta juniper. Good luck. Any questions feel free to ask!

I went to Birch Creek and caught a few but too small to keep.

Yes rattle snakes. As well as blow snakes. Usually they won't bother you if you dont bother them

How is Blackfoot reservoir? Is there access in there now?

Yes Blackfoot is open. I normally access it thru the bone road. I've heard mixed reports on blackfoot.
