Taking Scouts Fishing
#1
Going to take eleven Boy Scouts fishing in a couple of weeks. Any recommendations where they can catch anything near Cache County? I’m thinking maybe Wellsville pond or Mantua but if there was even a good spot to catch carp, catfish or anything else I would consider it. Most of these boys have never fished before and I want them to have a good experience. If you want to private message me that’s fine also. I appreciate any advice you have.

Porcupine would be a good option with good shore access. There are nice Browns and Rainbows in there. It is scenic and not far from Logan.

I would second porcupine. That is a fun lake to fish and with scouts, when they get board after 5 min there are lots of places to swim and play on the rocks. Hyrum is another good one all though I don;t really know about shore access there. I am usually fishing from my boat[Wink]

The problem is that the pig has been slow as snails lately. In a couple of weeks it night pick up, but .......

Hyrum, at the swim beach, is a good shore access place if you walk the shore some. Don't know how it is fishing.

Cutler’s Benson Marina is something to think about for Catfish and carp fishing.

Would you just fish worms at Benson? By the bridge or somewhere else? I haven’t had much luck out there but if we could pick up a few fish that would be fun.

Worms work very well at Cutler, I'm trying to think of the best location to tell you to try for 11 boys out there... The marina in Benson is probably best, you can spread out from the boat ramp to the bridge, but don't let the boys fall in at the bridge, it's deep and has more current there than you might think... There's a million mudcats, so most likely all boys could catch something, may not be the best fish, but it's a fish... I'd set them up with a bobber and a hook about 2' under it... they will catch fish... Cutler doesn't charge a fee, so that's nice... oh you can fish the south side at the marina too, but it's on the other side of the road, so if you don't want boys wandering across a highway, you may want to keep them on one side..

Otherwise I'd say Hyrum swim beach, but it's kind of expensive to get a group into there... Best of luck and I wish we didn't have weddings coming up or I'd see if I could get you into my parents place north of the marina... But they have a wedding they are getting set up for, so I'm sure they wouldn't be able to now... But their area is nice grass to the lake shore and room to spread out in between...

One other option you could try at the marina, is a walking trail out to the south that you can walk around the old railroad trestle and fish along the way... Not sure it would be as good of fishing as the marina area, but it would keep them active walking between places and its right at the marina area so it's centralized... If you need more info, let me know... Later Jeff

Carolina rig with cut bait like carp, bluegill, sucker. Small chunks of raw shrimp, chicken liver or hot dog also work. Use a circle hook and they will hook themselves. Evenings are best.

My nephew Thomas and a couple weeks later a niece Taya are both going to have their receptions at Mom and Dad's... So Mom is fussing over trying to get the yard presentable... That stuff guys never understand, but the ladies in our lives like to do... Guess I learned just to say yes ma'am and get it done... Good luck on the trip, it sounds like fun... Get them to cook a carp in the fire in tinfoil... Crazy scouts like them... My past boys still ask me about the time they ate carp... Later Jeff
