I have both a baitcaster on a flippin' stick and a large open face spinning reel on a 6'6" MH spinning rod that I was going to re-line this weekend. I like to put Fireline on these when I use them for trolling bottom bouncers for walleyes, but I'm not a fan of using Fireline for casting. What lines do you prefer for hucking big crankbaits for muskies on these setups?

[red] I like Fireline for almost everything, but I use PowerPro also. I also like to use Vanish for a leader line with both.[/red]

musky seem to have a hard head so for trolling i use mono to absord the shock of be pulled by the boat until power can be cut if casting i use a braid so i can stick them hard and drive home the hook

Maybe I've been using too light of a material. I typically only use 10 or 14lb Fireline. I'll have to give the 30lb a try. Thanks for the advice!!

i like to use 17lb maxima mono... i havnt lost a fish yet. and i have never used a steel leader for them eather. never been bit off . but i have lost a muskie killer by the dam about 30ft down in the rocks. usually when i get snagged i just go swimming. those lures are too expensive to lose.

I use 30/8 PowerPro for muskies. PowerPro is much better than Fireline. It casts well and trolls well (lures dive deeper than with mono). Tip it with a titanium leader--they're more expensive than steel but to maintain the smaller diameter, titanium is best. You do need a steel leader, as a muskie's teeth will cut a superline. Also, when fishing any superline, remember there is no stretch, so use a limber rod and set your drags light--tight enough to ensure a good hook set but light enough to let them run.

I agree, Power Pro is much better than Fireline. It lasts longer, frays less, and casts better. Has anyone tried the new Spider Wire braided line?

Yes I am one of the few fans of spiderwire.. Have been using it for years. I color code my lines on the spools (differet colors for different weight lines). I love this line. I do use a mono leader in most situations, but not all. Try fishing for wipers with a yellow line and no leader ..... it will be a long dry day on the water LOL.
