did anyone else see the "fishing accross america" tonight on the outdoor channel? they were jigging on flaming gorge for macs. they had a guide take them out.
i was a little shocked to see the erratic, tall swinging, jigging they were doing. they showed 3 fish get boated. the first they took the hook out before i could see, and the second was guthooked, and the third was hooked in the tail. despicable! i dont know what time of year they were fishing, but those fish sure didnt look too healthy as they were sinking to the bottom.
i had considered trying to learn how to jig- is this standard practice? or is this just a coincidence that at least 2 out of three were foul hooked? ive seen other shows where they jigged slower and hooked fish in the mouth.
did anyone else see this and find it disgusting?

I didn't see the program, but what you describe sounds like the unethical deliberate snagging that I have heard about when the fish are ganged up in Linwood Bay to spawn. It's disgusting. And, no, this is definitely not the sort of "jigging" that most folks do at the Gorge. The latter is a very focused, very deliberate, finesse presentation of the jig, and it's fairly rare to foul hook a fish.

if you want to see this first hand, go up in the end of nov. and watch in linwood bay at night (by the way linwood is closed at night). it will make you sick watching the six foot rip jig strokes with a huge hopkins spoon sporting a gaff as a treble hook.
i was not in town last nov or dec, so i can't say this happened last year for a fact but the year before it was happening everytime i was there.
if you can't catch them in the mouth are you really fishing?
no, this is not the standard practice. only the people that don't have any respect for a 20 year old fish do this.

[mad]That is freakin' pathetic!! And the fact that it was on national tv (well, dishtv anyway) and that a so called "guide" was showing them how to do this snagging process is downright $%^&y and uncalled for! I hope the DWR caught that episode, but I'll bet you a ton of money that they didn't! Too bad you didn't tape of TIVO this and send it to the DWR. I don't even have the Outdoor Channel (just the crappy OLN), but I'm losing respect for it already! They advertise for it so much in In-Fisherman that I had previously thought that it must be a great channel.[unsure]

If they were fishing for 20 # carp in an overpopulated water from a kayak or float tube, I could see maybe something in it. I have never been with anyone that intentially attempted to foul hook anything except a carp (and that's usually because when carp show up, the other fish go away). But, for the fish they were after, and where they were, foul hooking a fish could be considered a really crude fishing technique - used by someone somewhat too ill prepared to fish for a member of that specific species but willing to harvest or kill it anyway.
BTW - Any large fish that is sufficiently foul hooked enough to get up to the boat to release, is most likely too injured to survive too long. Fish that are that wounded will likely die of infection, loss of blood, internal injury and even starvation - depending on the location of the injury.
When I use jigging, as well as all of the other anglers with whom I fish, it is a presentation to the fish - usually with relatively slow and small subtle movements. And again,in relative terms, the hooks are generally on the smaller side and injury to the fish is minimal and non life threatening.

I didn't get the chance to see it myself, but it sure sounds suspicious. I hope the guide gets nailed! Breaking the law is bad enough, but do it on film and you really get a stupidity award. I hope they take his boat.

yep, that is the one. i dont think they did anything illegal as they released all three fish, but i do believe that it was unethical. watch and judge for yourselves.

[mad]Old Moe Guide Service. Those must be the bastards!!! Anybody else on this board get the Outdoor Channel? Not OLN, but The Outdoor Channel? As I stated in the earlier post, somebody might wanna TIVO or tape this program and give a copy to the DWR so they can have a "chat" with them.

they almost are never snagged if the fisherman does not ripp the jig up in big sweeps. slow jigging is how to lipp hook the lakers.
