Generous fisherman at Willard Bay
#1
[cool]I met up with the most generous person I may have ever met. After trolling all over the Bay and only catching a couple wipers and one walleye, I got to watch Crankem pull in and catch walleye after walleye and when he was finished he pulled up to me and tossed me his lure and said try this. I felt like the boy in the Coca Cola commercial with Mean Joe Green when he threw him his jersey. I was so excited that I might start catching fish that I forgot how low on gas I was and I fished until I ran out, about 1/2 hour later.
Called my wife and trolled to the south marina with my electric motor and my starting battery (main trolling battery was already dead). After getting some gas from my wife my daughter decided she would like to fish for awhile so she picked out a Yo Zuri lure that she thought was pretty and proceeded to catch a couple wipers and a couple walleye in about 15 minutes then she decided she was hot and tired and it was time to go home. I couldn't have agreed more and she outfished me again.
Thanks Crankem for your generosity, that's one of the nicest gestures I've been associated with in a long time. I figured out it must be the fisherman not the lure that makes the difference, I still couldn't catch a walleye.

Thanks for posting your repost Fishwriter, sounds like a good day on the bay even if the catching was a little slow for you. I'm guessing your daughter had a good time, for the few minutes she was there it sounds like she showed dad how to catch them. What area were you fishing? WH2

I started at the light pole at 6:30 am, then trolled along the west side, the south side and finally the island and that's where we caught them. My guess is that I'm trolling too slow, according to my gps I was trolling mosty at 2 mph but most boats were passing me. Some boats it was hard to tell if they were pulling crankbaits or skiiers. [crazy] I'm going to try tonight if the storms hold off and this time I'm going to try 3 mph.

I think you will find that trolling at 3 mph will work better for you. I have seen a few people trolling as fast as 4mph but most guys think that's a little fast but anything is worth a try if the speed your going doesn't work. Good luck tonight, I hope the thunder showers stay away from Willard. WH2
