Left Saturday for a trip in the back country up in the Skyline Drive area. Just to hold me over, in case I didn't catch any fish, I brought along several pounds of recently caught and cooked up fish fillets(fish sticks), which I happily munched on the way out of town. But, as it turned out, I didn't need that much - the fishing was good everywhere I went, and I ended up eating fish at every meal for 5 straight days.
10/15. Got to E-Lake and set up camp, put out fish traps for minnows and then hiked till dark. Checked the traps and had 4 minnows. Fixed dinner(fish sticks) for me, gruel for the hounds. Just as the full moon came up, I cast out a small spinner and got a small cutthroat. Went to a Rapala and got a larger cutt on the next cast. Had a late snack of fish sticks and hit the sack.
10/16. Checked the traps first thing in the A.M., and had half a dozen minnows in one, nothing in the other. After a hearty breakfast of fish sticks and fries, I started fishing my way around the lake using a variety of small crankbaits, spinners, swimming jigs and a fly under a casting float and caught fish every hundred yards or less, with a few spots producing more.
Most were cutts, but almost as many were bows - the cutts were larger. Stopped for lunch(fish sticks) and tossed out a line with a float and a fly and laid down in the sun and promptly fell asleep. I was awoken by my drag slowly and barely making noise and reeled in a 6 inch rainbow - I have no idea how long it was on there but, I released it and it looked no worse for the experience. Dinner was fish sticks.
10/17. Up early and it was cold - in the low 20's. The traps had 8 minnows. After breakfast(I had fish sticks), I fished with a new hard bait I had gotten a few weeks ago and had not used yet - it worked too well. I ended up keeping 2 fair sized cutts that were too injured to release - those hooks were sharp and at least 4 out of the 6 hooks were deeply imbedded in both of the fish. Although lunch would be fish sticks, dinner was to be fresh trout.
10/18. Got up for some more fish sticks and fries and then left E-lake for a small stream and some fly fishing. Caught a couple of small browns
(must have been the really stupid ones) and the hounds had fun chasing countless other fish(the smart ones) into deep cover before I could get close enough to fling a fly.
Again, lunch and dinner was fish sticks.
10/19. Breakfast - fish sticks and fries. On the way home, I stopped off at Scofield and within 45 minutes to an hour had a limit with one at just over 18 inches - which I kept.
I finished off the last of the fish sticks just as I passed by Utah lake on I-15.
